Beomaster 1000 with tuner problems
Hi.
I got a nice Beomaster 1000 on my desk. This is the black-key version, type 2313. I was told it was otherwise working but the tuning cord seemed to be jammed....
The external parts and cabinet are in almost mint condition. When I first time opened the cover (to have a look on the tuning mechanism) I noted that there was something pink over the boards... someone have had a candle on the top of the BM and it has released wax inside the BM!! Fortunately it was easy to remove (almost) completely in big blocks.
I have been testing the BM with headphones attached to the speaker output. (Wireless Sennheiser phones with self-made adapter cable). The tuner is working, but it has a strange sound; like there was constant bass-tone on the bottom with a lot of distortion. Also the bass on the music is heavily distorted. Some channels (the stronges ones?) can't be listened as they are even more distorted. (If I tune it slightly off it gets better). Also when tuning the no-channel-noise is distorted.
There are a lot of electrolytic capacitors on the boards that are likely the cause of this problem but I wouldn' be that excited replacing them all... I have already replaced the green 2000 uF 50v power supply cap and the speaker output caps (2000 uF 25v). The originals are just HUGE compared to the new ones! These replacements helped a bit. I made a quick test thrue tape input and it showed no trouble with distortion. So I guess this is primary a tuner related thing.
I will replace at least the few small caps on the fuse board next to the transformer (as those caps don't look that good).
All suggestions welcome!

Re: Beomaster 1000 with tuner problems
Solved!
I was just too jumpy - the problem was too weak aerial signal. The newer tuners usually manage with a small 10cm aerial wire here but this needed a bit more wire (well, this is the earliest B&O I have yet seen). Now it's playing just fine. There are still some smaller caps (those blue Philips(?) axial ones) that look like leaked so I will replace the worst ones. Just in case. The chassis will need some cleaning but the rest seems easy.

Re: Beomaster 1000 with tuner problems
I was originally about to post my questions to your thread (at the moment it seems to have been better choise as there is nothing dramatically wrong with mine). Your question about "Dillen's Cap Kits" (TM) was a good one and I am also looking forward his answer!
Anyway I am going to replace the worst-looking caps and sand down and wax the wooden parts. I may post photos as I progress.
I had always thought BM1000's too simple and not that good-looking but now as I have one in front of me I will have hard time giving it away! (I have this only for repair for a friend).

well, it seems we are on the same page!
i have a pair of 1000's with matching bv2200's (the earlier version). one is in rosewood and near perfect, the other is in teak and is the one i am working on. i had the teak one for some time and had not used it much. on the surface it needs some woodwork done. my brother-in-law is a real "master" with wood and enjoys the modern danish era of furniture. i decided that i would gift him the teak set with the stipulation that he redoes the wood! as we pulled it out and fired it up... we noticed the weak R channel. so, he is yet to take delivery. i think he is really excited though, as it will be his first b&o and really fits his style. personally, i think that they are really great looking, and besides the 900's -the 1000 are IMHO the jumping off point to collecting "modern" era b&o.
i will also try to get some pics together for my thread as well!
good luck!

Re: Beomaster 1000 with tuner problems
Just a small idea... ;)
In this time (1960-1975) there were tantal caps used in the amplifiers sound path and in the bass/treble regulators.
Replace them by MKS/MKP capacitors. Tantal caps have a very long lifespan, but a very bad sound. Tantal causes a sound with way too much bass, but only small treble.
My BM1001 had used 6 of these caps, replaced by Wima MKS-2 you would not recognize it, it plays almost "audiophil", at least much better.

Re: Beomaster 1000 with tuner problems
That sounds exciting!
On which boards are these tantal caps? On the service manual (the ones on Beoworld doesn't seem to match with my BM as it's type 2313) I can't see any other type than electrolytics. What values / voltage ratings are they?

Re: Beomaster 1000 with tuner problems
OK... some more than 6 caps, around 20 in total.
You see these small red tantal caps, like a teardrop? Just replace them by the same capacity, but by a plastic MKS or MKP type. Wima MKS-2 is very good for this, even the size fits almost, but only almost. A 10uF Wima is twice a tantal in size.
The white/silver axial caps are styroflex caps... they sound great, even after 30-40 years they are still the best what you can get for money :)

Re: Beomaster 1000 with tuner problems
Martin, the Beomasters 1000 and 1001 are completely different machines. I am not sure if there are any tantals in any of the Beomaster 1000 versions at all. I agree on the styroflex caps. They, and the mustard coloured 1950's types are about the only types of capacitors I actually like to dismount and keep from scrapped sets. They are superb components and very reliable as well.
Beomaster 1000 capacitor kits are in development. With at least 17 different factory types and up to as many as 35 sub-revisions of each type of the Beomaster 1000, not to mention options of 2 different stereo decoders and RIAA preamp, putting together one kit to cover it all is practically impossible.
There will be several kits according to the exact type and the kits will probably contain lamps as well since they seem to be very hard to find, at least in some areas. I am collecting info as hard as I can, serial numbers, revision notes etc. Hopefully kits will be ready soon, at least for the most common types.

Re: Beomaster 1000 with tuner problems
I have here one type 2317 (s/n 22228 with stereo decoder, "serie 06" whatever that means) and may have another sometime soon. Martin, let me know if you need any info on this one.

Re: Beomaster 1000 with tuner problems
If you need any info about the 2313 type of mine Martin, just ask!
I didn't see any of those tantal caps inside but I will keep this in mind with future projects!
I replaced the huge green power supply cap and the two speaker coupling caps with modern ones. Also some of the blue electrolytics on the main board were leaking some ugly stuff out of one end of the cap so I replaced the bad ones. If I'd be looking for perfection I know these all should be replaced by now but as it works I will let it be. I assembled the BM today and quickly waxed the wooden parts and cleaned the surface and now it looks like new! One opened thing out of the workbench!
