    BeoGram 4500 with a BeoCenter 9300 - won't play

I finally got my BeoGram 4500 home from the service today and it seems I am missing something, because it won't start playing.

It is connected  to the BeoCenter 9300 through the Phono input. I've put in an old Jean Michelle Jarre record, pressed Phono on the BeoCenter and then I heard something started going on in the BeoGram and it showed 33 on the tangential arm, but after a couple of seconds everything just stopped.

Is something wrong with the BeoGram, did I miss something or is it something else. This is my first BeoGram and I have no idea how it should work. Thank you in advance for your help.

Have you released the transit screws. 3 screws marked on the underside.

    Try again.

    Regards Graham

    I can't believe I overlooked this one - I forgot to loosen the transport screws : )

It's all well now and it's playing the first song and I must say it's amazing. Love it to bits!

EDIT: Thanks, you've beat me to it.

    OOPSBig Smile

The easy fixes are always the best but don't feel bad about it I'm sure you aren't the first to do this (and you certainly WON'T be the last).

I do have another question - I went through the user manual and I noticed the bit about adjusting the stylus pressure. I'm not sure whether my dealer has set it to the right position or not, so I would like to double-check. It seems quite tricky to access the slider, so I have two questions: Would it not play if it was set wrong, or would it just damage the stylus and/or the record? And, how can I reach the slider so I can see it clearly and set it - I'm afraid I'll brake something, as the arms seem quite fragile.

The slider is located at the pick-up arm and should be easy to access if you are approaching it from the left side og the arm. Tracking force should be set at 1,2 grams if the MMC4 pickup is mounted. If there is an MMC2 or MMC1, the pressure should be between 0,8 and 1 gram.

And yes, both your whole record collection and stylous can be badly damaged if to little or to great tracking force is used

Oh and what should I clean the stylus with? The user manual suggests a "tiny brush" that is supposed to come in the package, but as mine didn't come with it, I'm wondering what are the alternatives? Also, how often should I do it?

Thank you Søren. I managed to set it without a problem now and good thing I did, as it was placed at about 1,5g or so. I played about three songs with it set that way - would that be enough to damage the stylus and the records? I'm playing the record again now and I don't really notice any difference. Erm

EDIT: maybe a bit more scratching sounds... or could I be imagining?

You will have done no damage at all. I tend to set the tracking weight by ear - most B&O cartridges actually need a little more weight these days. You will do more damage with a mistracking cartridge than one with a few tenths of a gramme more.

The brush that comes with an electric razor makes a reasonable stylus brush. I tend to clean the stylus before each play - gently!! The 8000 has a brush fixed in place which the stylus went through before and after each play. As it did this sideways, it was terrifying to watch it try to snap the cantilever and most have been removed by anxious owners!!

I bought one of these sets - works fine and after a bit of practise, the record cleaning part does as well.

Only clean the stylus when you suspect (or see) that it has collected crud, it's no use overdoing it since it is always a bit risky.

Be very careful with stylus cleaning solution - don't let it run up the cantilever as it can damage the suspension.
