Does anyone know if the Beomedia 1 can be used with a usb modem connected to it?! That's the only internet connection i have... If not i guess the only option is to go with beoport (ho humm)

?? USB Modem? You mean Dial up or cable/dsl?

Normally you would link this modem into a network and then share it.

It's one of those wireless internet dongles, that i plug straight into the mac... i guess what you say means i'd have to send the internet through wi-fi from the mac to a router which has ethernet out? Damn that would mean that the mac has to be turned on... hmm .

I've just always wanted to integrate my internet and get acess to n.radio and n.music through the house and all my equipment is is n.music capable... but owning a mac with a usb internet connection might make things very difficult might'n  it

And the dongle uses the mobile phone network? There are routers which have an internal 3G modem. Then you'd just swap the SIM card from the dongle to the router, connect the BM1 with an ethernet cable to the router, and use the internet on the Mac through wi-fi. This would of course mean that you cannot use the dongle with your Mac on the road unless you swap SIM cards again.

These boxes cost about the same that better WLAN enabled ADSL routes did some time ago, i.e not that much, and you have the ADSL option as well in case you'll need it some day. I'd suggest you go to some better local computer store or contact your ISP to discuss which product might work for you, there may be some local variations or restrictions.

Oh wow, that's amazing advice Mika, thankyou!!! Big Smile

Yes i only got the dongle because my house isn't wired with a telephone line, the mac doesn't move anywhere. Basically what you've told me means i can use a BM1 in my setup yay!

Does anyone use one with a mac, was it tough to configure?

I browsed around a little, and it seems the 3G modem typically isn't built-in in the cheaper mobile-enabled routers, you'll have to add it. But there are products that accept either a PCCard or USB modem, so with a little bit of luck (not all combinations are supported) you might be able to use your existing dongle. Smile

There boxes are typically configured through a web page on router, so using a Mac should be no problem there. You may have to use a wired ethernet connection for the initial configuration.

Here's one complete solution from Option and Dovado UMR is one example of the simpler ones  (I have no personal experience with either). The latter seems to be distributed by iBurst in Australia, if you happen to be one of their customers Smile

    Re: Beomedia 1 with mac

So, can anyone tell me if i'm making a mistake by getting a BM1 to use with my intel imac?I've done ALOT of searching of the forums and i conclude that it's a product i want and will enjoy but I'm so worried it's going to be the biggest headache synching and tranferring data. How much i should pay for a used one, anyone? Smile

I use the same setup and it works great. I do, however, do things a bit differently than is recommended. The iTunes plugin creates a script that copies the music to the BeoMedia manually. I do not use that. I don't want duplicate files roaming around. (Some might, so don't take this as the best option necessarily). I setup iTunes to locate the music collection on the BeoMedia 1 so that when I rip a CD or download music, it is put straight on the BeoMedia 1 and organized correctly.

As far as how much to pay, as a retailer I would suggest Full Retail! If that doesn't work for you, then how about as little as possible?

G'day, thanks! Could you please tell me how you have it connected? I wish i could afford full retail but i can't.

I'm worried that if i buy one it won't work when i connect it

Beomedia 1 ethernet and USB internet dongle > airport express  > iMac via airport. Is that how you have it connected Trip? If not would it work?

OH and i just realised, i'm limited to 7GB a month, does N.Radio and N.Music from BM1 use alot of download?!

I think the N Radio is out of option with that limitation. Also, it may not even work as the data is send in "bursts" rather then a constant stream. I have one of these modem dongles too, it is relatively speedy but not mend to be a replacement for a home high speed internet connection.

That said, your Beoplayer will query an Internet DB to get track names, that should work and not push you towards that limit.

For normal surfing though, getting updates for your PCs or Macs 7GB is not that much. Think about it this way, one movie out of the Itunes store can be easily 1 GB. A ripped CD maybe around 100MB or more depending on quality and lenght (we are not talking lossless).

If you really want to relplace a DSL or cable modem with this, I would pay up for unlimited.

    Cheers
