just got my first b&0 component(mid-80's Beomaster 3000) - NEED HELP!

    hey all,

i'm excited to have just become a b&o owner.  i've had many super hi fi components in the past(still do- i'm a recording engineer), and i've always been in love with the look of b&o.  i confess to having bought my beomaster 3000 with no prior knowledge of its performance.  the purchase was triggered by my love of design.  it really is a thing of beauty.

o.k., so here'as the problem.  i ran tests and i'm able to hear sources in stereo using headphones.  only one side of the speaker outs works.  i opened up the unit and searched in vain for a pair of fuses that may correlate to left & right respectively.  i found only one large ac fuse, and another smaller fuse on the other side of the "center" printed circuit board.  are there speaker protection fuses hidden somewhere?  i recall reading that this unit has built-in speaker protection circuitry.  does this preclude the need for fuses?  if that's the case, what is it exactly that is fried in my component?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

    sincerely,

    peter mavrogeorgis

If the headphones are working in stereo, that is a good sign! I take it neither speaker 1 or 2 are working on one channel. This would suggest to be that you have one side switching on the protection circuit when a load is put across it. Probably an individual component failure - capacitors or variable resistor in the power amplifier board. You will need to measure the components - the service manual is available if you are good at that sort of this or get it serviced - should be relatively cheap!

    Hi

If u can hear both channels with earphones - the output amplifier is ok. Check for bad contact elements in the speaker switches and/or headphone jack switches. To isolate the problem further you can connect the speakers to output 2. If it's the same result here the fault is probably in the speaker switch (output 2 is not affected by the headphone plug).

    Welcome to Beoworld PeterSmile

Gorgeous item to start your collection, in no time at all, you'll have a house full!
The 3000 looks great mounted on a wall. I have mine above my PC sending PC music to Redlines above my kitchen units.

Check the TEST switch at the rear left side. It coudl be oxidated, operate it a couple of times.

    hello all,

i'm blown away by the quick responses.  this piece of equipment illicits such an emotional response from all who see it.  we just had a new years eve party, and many people asked questions about it.  i was forcd to use the right side only, sending the output from speaker one to one channel, and that from speaker two to the other.  both left side speaker outputs do not work.   bummer!

i'd like to try the test switch idea.  however, i cannot locate it.  is it inside the unit?  also, how do i obtain a service manual?  i like doing my own repairs when i can.  it's also interesting to understand the signal flow.

is there a trick to getting the bottom off without cracking the pc board that houses the remote sensor?  i did a nice job cracking that right off the board.  i'll glue it and hardwire it.

    thanks again,

    peter

p.s.  which  redline speaker sounds best?

Sorry - my mistake. The TEST button is on the older 70's version.

Your Beomaster has a hybrid IC output amplifier. Basically one large chip.

Sorry for asking but you did check the balance control under the lid ?

i did check the balance control.  it works perfectly with the headphones.  it must be a component failure.  does anyone know what typically fails in this circuit?

    thanks(sas efxaristo)

The contacts in the speaker sockets. Careful prodding a little using a very tiny screwdriver you will be able to increase contact pressure.

Did u check the speaker switches as i wrote earlier? Operate them a few times to see if any oxide cause the problem. The speaker switches and the headphone jack switch is what I would check. They're in the signal path from the amplifier (which works) since u have sound in the earphones.
