    beogram 1700

    Hi at the forum,

I have a problem with my beogram 1700 turntable. When a record has completed playing the tone arm does not rise and therefore drags across the record. The tone arm seems to rise after it has returned.

It's a lovely turntable that otherwise works perfectly. I purchased it new in 1980 with a MMC 20CL cartridge...I'm interested in using vinyl again and would like to restore it to its former glory...i can tell you you i get nervous every time a record gets near the end ;-(

Any advice on solving this problem would be appreciated.

cheers and Merry Christmas from Australia

    Welcome to Beoworld, David!

I suppose your turntable is victim to a very common problem (happens to all of them, sooner or later) on this kind of mechanisms. The arm lifter gets stuck when the lubrication ages.

This thread should show you how to fix it. It's not too hard and doesn't require any special tools, just plenty of care and patience; take your time to avoid breaking anything and make notes how it goes back together. It must be like a family member after almost 30 years!

Thanks so much for your response. I will give it a go. I'm quite handy and enjoy a challenge. And yes it does seem like a neglected member of the family.

    cheers and thanks again

We weren't as gracious as the indicated thread suggests, using switch cleaner solvent and vigorously pumping the cueing lifting "pin" in and out to free it off.

You won't need to add any fresh damping grease, as the lift/lower action on the main cam is gentle enough I found.

Great little deck the 1700, especially with one of the better cartridges in it - the 20S was the limiting factor IMO.
