    Problem with my Avant

Dear all, I am new to this and wondered if anyone else has had a problem like this.  I have an Avant DVD 28" which is nearly four years old with a Sky+ box which has been attached for two years.  Over the last two months I have had a problem when turning the set on.  When I press SAT on the Beo4 the tv responds, SAT lights up and turns the Sky box on but no picture or sound appears, also no other functions work such as the DVD or Stand, and there is no response using the Beo4 or the buttons on the top of the set.  After switching the power off and on, sometimes once sometimes a few times, the set starts up as normal and, once it is on, it works perfectly.  B&O suggested that the Sky box be earthed which has been done by my local engineer, I think that he also has fitted a new chassis.  There are times when this does not happen for say two weeks and then we get a spate of it happening.  Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, what was the problem?  My engineer and I are at a loss to know what is wrong and I would be grateful for any suggestions.

When you say "My Engineer" do you mean your B&O dealers engineer ?

Given your description, my first thoughts are that it is power supply or earthing related related, when you say your engineer has fitted a new chassis, are you talking about the AVANT chassis or what ?

When you say there is no picture or sound, is there a blank raster ? or is the screen as if it were switched off ?

    Regards Keith....

Yes, it is a B&O engineer and yes it is as if the set is off although the SAT is lit up on top of the screen and the Sky box is switched on.

Sorry meant to say that as far as I understand it was the Avant chassis that was replaced.

Well, given the main AVANT chassis was replaced and you still have the problem, then this problem is certainly power supply or earthing related.

I am assuming that your B&O engineer has checked all the voltages out of the power supply PCB4 at plugs P41 P42 & P43, if they are all correct when the AVANT is failing then you should look at earthing.

You stated that B&O previously asked you to earth the Sky box, exactly how did you do that ? I suggest you take a wire from mains earth to the aerial plug screen plugged into the back of the AVANT, given you use Sky, I am assuming you still have an analogue aerial plugged into the AVANT.

    Regards Keith....

Stupid suggestion from me - try another SCART lead. One of my VCRs did something similar and the cable was faulty. Intermittent fault which gave no picture.

    Re: Problem with my Avant

Keith many thanks for your reply.  I am not at all sure if my engineer has checked the voltages as you suggest and he earthed the Sky box so not sure what he did (me decidedly untechnical).  We do not have an analogue aerial plugged in.  I will suggest all this to my engineer as he is calling later in the week - almost a member of the family he has been here so often!

Well, you made a statement which is very helpful, you said

"We do not have an analogue aerial plugged in"

Whilst you do not have an aerial plugged in, have you tried pressing the TV button when the fault occurs instead of Sky using DTV ?

The one thing which still points to a AVANT power supply problem is the statement you made where you said the AVANT screen does not have a raster at all, so to be sure, next time it fails press the MENU button on the Beo4 and if you do not get the menu on the left hand side of the screen the setup menu, it is almost sure to be a power supply fault in the AVANT.

Are you really sure there is no blank raster when you have the problem, remember you can only just see a blank raster when correctly setup without a signal ?

    Regards Keith....
