    BeoMaster 5 & BeoSound 5 Poll

The BeoMaster 5 and Beosound 5 have been with the dealers for almost two weeks now and there has been much debate on Beoworld over these products. This is the first of a few polls to get members views

Which statement reflects your views about the BeoMaster/Beosound 5 ?

    • Based on my review of the product, I WILL certainly buy one (10.2%)
    • Given it's current functionality, I would NOT purchase one of these units (23.7%)
    • I have already ordered a BeoMaster/Beosound 5 system for delivery in March 2009 (10.2%)
    • I am interested to purchase, but wish to wait until the first installations have been done (23.7%)
    • I have already all the functionality of the Beosound 5 with other products (32.2%)
    • Total Votes: 59
    • Voting Ended: 12/10/2008

    Regards Keith....

    Re: BeoMaster 5 & BeoSound 5 Poll

I have voted for number 1, but that does not mean that I will buy one soon.

I am very happy with my CDs and my BS9000. I actually think the BS5 is superior to the BS9000 in terms of use, but I would like to enjoy my 9000 for as long as possible. I am sure, that when I get a BS5, the 9000 will only be use occasionally, and that is a pity.

    Living room: BV7-40 mkIV + V8000, BL5, BL3, BM1 and BS9000. Bedroom: MX3000 and BL4500 on MCL2-AV. Around: PentaIII, CX100 and MCX35 on ML/MCL + MCL2-A, BeoPort and BL4 on ML, BS3300 + M75 as stand alone, BC6000 + BC600 and BT1100, LC1, LC2, Beo4, Beo5 and BL1000, BS2 and A8, EarSet2, Apron, Coffee mugs, Enamel Bagdes, Bath towel, Keyring, Books, Lots of miniature and the Bottle opener. Office: BC2300 + BL2500 and BS3. Summer house: BS Century.

    Addicted? Oh no.... ;)

I would vote number 1, but spending £3700 on a hifi seems a little excessive as a student! Either way, it's my favourite bit of B&O kit.

As a consumer Alex. Wait until you start earning. £3700 is a lot for anyone earning even £50,000 a year, particularly for a digital media player. It's hardly a 'hifi'.

    Re: BeoMaster 5 & BeoSound 5 Poll

    I could have voted 2 or 5.

Eventually decided on 2 as I know myself: Even if it would only have "only" matched the functionality that my combination of AppleTV/Beoport/iPhone currently provide - I would have considered buying one (I just love B&O too much for design) ... But this product sadly gives less functionality at greater price - so it's a definate NO

(Not saying that if there'll be any second hand units around eventually at reasonable pricing, I would not go for one ;-) )

    Re: BeoMaster 5 & BeoSound 5 Poll

Is there any compression (and therefore loss of information) when transferring to digital media?

I still like my LPs and CDs (simply as the latter avoid the crackle and clicks with the former)

Lossless is what it says on the tin - no loss in quality!

Generally speaking, you aren't learning much if your lips are moving.

    Re: BeoMaster 5 & BeoSound 5 Poll

There are three types of 'encoding' you can use:

    • Uncompressed - basically what you find on a CD, or what WAV and AIFF files usually contain (referred to as PCM from a technical point of view)

    • Lossless - sounds identical to the above, and no information is lost, instead it is effectively 'densely' packed. Works in exactly the same way as a ZIP file. Examples include Apple Lossless, FLAC and WMA Lossless

    • Lossy - information is lost, and you hear a drop in sound quality. Examples include MP3, WMA, AAC and MP2.

EDIT: Although I should mention that not all of the above formats are BeoSound 5 compatible.
