install RIAA in BG 4002 ?

    Hi all,

A member of the Dutch forum would like to use his BG 4002  with his Ouverture.

The Beogram would have to be equiped with a RIAA pre-amplifier,

can it be built into the Beogram or how does this work ?

    Thanks Smile

If he can find the rare CD4 module, this fits into the Beogram 4002 (it was an option) and boosts the signal to line level. I would actually suggest looking out for a Beogram 6000 which has this as standard and which do come up fairly frequently.

How about using a separate Pre-Amp. Naim ones still use Din connections. Myself I use a Pro-Ject Phono Box with my BS3000. Works perfectly.

Re: install RIAA in BG 4002 ?

If you've built circuits before, you can make your own external one.  It's a very simple circuit.  Go to National Semiconductor's website, and look at the data sheet for the LM833 chip.  They give the the actual riaa preamp circuit.  They also have a schematic for a two-stage riaa preamp although slightly more complicated, but that should be even better than the original b&o one.  For the spot on the circuit where it asks for plus and minus power to the chip you can just use two nine volt batteries (one for each polarity).  And since you're making the circuit yourself, you can put the DIN connectors on rather than the usual RCA.  In the end you might still spend about as much as you would pay for a simple external one (about $50 if you pay for a nice enclosure, less otherwise), but sometimes it's fun to make stuff yourself, and you'll get to have DIN plugs on it too.

I just found this kit, which uses a better chip than the lm833.  So you can buy this kit and solder it together.  Then put 7-pin DIN connectors on it rather than the rca plugs.  For the pins that control the datalink, just use wires to bypass the riaa module on the DIN connectors.
