Beogram CD50 - starts with no sound

I have an unusual problem on my Beogram CD50.

When it starts playing there is no sound. After about 3 minutes there is some sound but it is incredibly distorted. If I wait another 30 seconds or so the distortion disappears and it works perfectly.

This only happens when it has been on standby for a while, if it has only been put on standby for a few mins it still works fine.

I am pretty sure it is not the Beomaster as the problem does not happen with other sources.

     Any ideas?

Yes... classic defect of capacitors in the sound line. Change caps... sorry, i dont have the part numbers available.

Look for green/black/dusty/dirty wires on the caps or brown liquid on the caps.

    Simon,

Whilst Die_Bogener may well be correct about the one or two capacitors being at fault as they smooth the + & - 15 volts for the operation amplifiers and given the symptoms you have described does support the case.

However before you pull everything apart you may wish to connect the output (left & right) to another amplifier or headphones to be sure.

    Regards Keith....

Thanks for the replies, it does look as if capacitors are the likely culprit.

One thing I am sure of is that if I attempted the repair myself   I would probably make things worse! Could anyone recommend a repairer based in the North West of  England who could do the work for me?

    Thanks again

I agree with Die_Bogener. There's a group of caps near the power supply area. If bad, they will affect the muting circuit etc. and the symptoms you describe is typical of marginal caps "warming up". It will only get worse with time.

Replace the lot and check for cracked solders around the voltage regulators etc.

I finally got around to taking it to King Street and my CD50 is now back with around half a dozen capacitors replaced and with the loading mechanism etc. given a thorough overhaul, and it is working better than ever.

Thanks for the update - it is good to know that there is still life in these excellent CD players!

they are one of the best CD players around, my CD50 was playing up before Xmas, and I got it serviced by Tim and it sounds really good again.

combined with the Beomaster 5500 and some good speakers, CD's sound warm and natural, very similar to vinyl on a good turntable like the Beogram 4000 Big Smile

Very much like the CDX, the CD50 is a superb machine and nearly always repairable. Both of these CD players have a lovely warm tonal quality and are always worth putting some effort into to bring back to full working order.
