Ouverture CD not working and MX7000 loses text time update

    Hello,

Recently I got a bargain on a mint Ouverture and MX7000, Everything is working but the two things mentioned in the heading.

The CD spins just under two turns and stops.  When it stops, the display shows "CD    <>".  I tried the test service program for the CD section.  I can see no laser light (through a piece of paper) when making the initial test but the focus motor and the movement of the laser seems to work fine.  When testing with a CD loaded, however, I receive no error messages but the symptoms are similar to when I try to play a CD (two turns and the strange CD  <> shown in the display.  The manuals does not mention this anywhere,, as far as I have found.

The MX:  I was able to set the time update from Teletext once, from our main broadcaster in Norway.  After the set was switched to standby and then back on, it had lost this setting from the menu.

I would appreciate advice on the following questions:

Are the symptoms likely caused by a broken CD mechanism or is there other possible causes?

Anyone who can decipher or explain the strange <> appearing in the dsplay after a CD has failed to play?

The lack of Teletext synchronisation is a very minor thing, of course.  Anyhow, I would appreciate any explanation or advice as to the cause of this minor disfunction.

    Regards

    Sverre

    Sverre:

Is your Ouverture the one with the linear or radial pick up?

I've written rather extensively on the subject so you can do a search; perphaps something useful there.

Dillen offers great advise. Pull the clamper up manually and point a digital camera at the laser and hit play. If it lases you'll see a red dot. If not then the laser is likely dead.

You can order replacement lasers for fairly cheap price (much cheaper than upgrading to the CD PRO2 from B&O) provided that servo board is not dead. Most of the time it is just the laser.

Message me if you need a source for the replacement pickup.

    Hello Derek,

Thank you for the reply and advice. I have the linear pick up.  I assume you are referring to the thread "CD Compatibility Beosound 4000 / Overture", and the symptoms are sismilar to those you describes.  Did you notice the <> sign in the display when it was broken? Was the operation to replace the laser difficult?

    Hi Sverre:

There were a number of threads. Do a search for CDM 12.

<> shows up when it can't read the  CD.

It does not mean that the laser is dead because the system has no way of knowing this. It is saying that it attempted to read the CD and could not.

Download the service manual from this site. Put the machine in TEST MODE. This will allow you to manually turn on the laser as well as basic controls such as moving the pickup and spinning up the turntable motor.

See if you can get the laser to lase. If it does not, you could have a faulty optical pick up and/or electronics.

Most of the time it is the laser, but on mine the electronics were bad.

Re: Ouverture CD not working and MX7000 loses text time update

    Thank you Derek.

I have now gotten around to do all the tests again.  The laser is lasing, and all tests works out as they should:

After having put the ouverture in Test mode, without a CD in the player, and pressed CD I:

    - pressed 1, and the laser switched on and searched focus

    - pressed 2, and the laser switched off

    - pressed 3, and the CD motor started running with the laser going into the starting position

    - pressed 4, and the CD motor stopped

    - pressed 5, and the laser arm moved the full way down

    - pressed 6, and the laser arm moved up towards the centre.

I then loaded a CD, brought the system into test mode again, and pressed CD.  I had expected error messages, but all I got was the <> in the display.

The Ouverture is obviously not able to read or recognise a CD, although the laser is lasing.  Is it fair to assume that the electronics is defect?  I have found a refurbished CDM12 mechanism with the electronics in Germany.  Would it be worth a try to change the mechanism or do I need a specialised B&O version of the CDM12?

Thank you for your valuable advice.

Is there a VX5000/5500/7000 in the system? If yes, the time master ist the VX recorder, nor the MX and not the Ouverture.

Check and set Time/date on the VX. If it looses time, check the lithium battery of the VX.

Re: Ouverture CD not working and MX7000 loses text time update

    Hello Martin,

No VX in the system, but I have a HDR 1 connected.  Would this be the time master, and does it have a litium battery for keeping time?

It seemed to loose about 5 minutes on 24 hours.  The set-up is in a small studio I use during weekdays.  Now I have been away for 14 days, so I will check again tomorrow .

By the way, you might be pleased to know that the MX 5500 you repaired for me two years ago (when I lived in Belgium) is still working perfectly.

    Regards

SmileSmile I'm very pleased, thank you  Smile

The HDR1 has no clock function i think, but i dont know this for sure... at least i have not seen a clock chip in the manuals.

The MX7000 neither, the MX uses the videotext function for this.

But the ouverture has a clock chip and a lithium battery on the cpu board... at least my Beosystem 2500 has a lithium battery inside and the same cpu board is also used in the ouverture i think.

Hmmm, try to program a timer for playing, disconnect power and check wether this timer stays in memory or gets lost after some time. My BS2500 had a bad lithium battery after just 16 years and it was beginning with being late for some minutes.

Re: Ouverture CD not working and MX7000 loses text time update

It seems to me that all units have a clock function.  When I checked the system this evening, both the Ouverture and the HDR reported correct time.  The MX was out of sync with nearly 30 minutes.  All units had been connected but not used for the past 14 days.

The timer recordings - same time every day - started two minutes late on day two, The delay increased with around two minutes every day.To me this indicates that the master time in the system is held by the MX.  I'll try disconnecting the Scart cable to the HDR, and program a similar series of recordings, next time I am absent over a period.

    Sverre:
To my knowledge the B&O control electronics is specific to B&O (the PCB on the mech). I tried swapping the board with a non B&O mech and it did not work.

If the mech from Germany is cheap, you can gamble on it. Perhaps you can swap optical unit over if it doesn't work.

Or you can order just the optical pick up from pinvan.com

I'm at a loss as to why the CD is not reading after successful tests. It looks like a gamble either way.

If anyone can add to picture please do!

Your final option is to order a replacement mechanism from B&O. Graham says in the UK that they are reasonable considering.

    Sverre:

One other thing you can try if you haven't already fixed the problem is to lower the spindle motor table.

That is get the CD closer to the optical pickup or if its too close to move it back up a bit.

The focus distance does make a difference.
