    Beomaster 2400-2 Volume

Just aquired a BM2400-2. Has terrible hum which obviously means changing all the caps. One thing that I'm not sure of is that when I turn it on and decrease the volume all the way down... when the lowest level is reached it jumps immediately to the highest volume. If I decrease the volume and stop and then start decreasing it again it won't jump to the highest volume when the lowest level is reached.

Is this also to do with the caps or is it something else? Considering the BM and remote are in mint cosmetic condition, I don't want to start fiddling inside with things I shouldn't.

     Thanks!

Replace caps first. You can't really judge anything based on unstable supplys etc.

I agree.  Change the caps first.  It's actually not that big a job on the 2400.  I did mine years ago, and it cured it of "odd behaviors" as well as humm.

Oh..... btw... If you change the main filter caps by the power supply, check the diode bridge.  Mine had one bad diode in it causing the humm in the first place.  A scope showed it right away.  It'll need looking at if you change the caps and it still humms.

    Re: Beomaster 2400-2 Volume

    Thanks Marc

Unfortunately changing capacitors is as far as I am able to go! Once I change all the elec. capacitors and it doesn't work then it gets wrapped up and put away till I find someone who can!! I don't have a scope...would know how to use one...and have no idea where the diode bridge is!!

I have opened the BM and written down all the capacitor values and will go and buy them this week. Will change them on the weekend. I have two shelved BM1900's, Beocenter 7002 and a Beogram 4002 as the problems couldn't be rectified by replacing the caps.

Thats why I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Stick out tongue

A cap kit is available for the BM2400 amd I can also help you with the rectifier if needed.

What's wrong with the other things, you mentioned ?

    Re: Beomaster 2400-2 Volume

There is one of the BM1900 that I would really like to get going as its a white one. It blows one of the main fuses after a while. The volume goes a bit erratic after a while also..goes up and down on its own and the the two green arrows around the stand by light shine on dimly no matter what function is selected. The BG4002 i'm not too stressed about as I have bought another one which works perfectly. The BC 7002 plays softly on one channel and the other BM1900 I honestly can't remember!!

The white BM1900 is the one I'd like to get going, but I fear it will be very difficult for me.

     Thanks for the interest Martin.

    Re: Beomaster 2400-2 Volume

Well I have changed all the capacitors on the BM 2400-2. The terrible hum has gone and the volume seems to be acting normal. I thought I was never going to finish!!

I hooked it up to a pair of S75's but it doesn''t seem to be able to produce the sound like the BM 4400 I have usually hooked up to the S75's. I think maybe I should try the S45's on the BM 2400-2 because it  seems to lack the power to drive the S75's. There's quite a difference.

    Congratulations!!

Wasn't really that hard, was it?

I'm in the process of re-capping a Studer mixing console.  Now THAT'S a job!

It did seem like I was never going to finish but I'm very proud that I managed! I can now add it to my B&O collection with pride!

Well done, it must make you very proud when you use it.

A 2400-2 should be able to drive S75s no problem. One of the recommended combinations! My original system morphed into a 2400-2 with a 4004 and S75s. Performed well at many a student party! Was even borrowed a few times! The record player never skipped!

    Re: Beomaster 2400-2 Volume

I still have my 2400-2 with a MINT remote.  It is still one of my all time favorite B&O pieces.

It has performed so well over the years I have owned it that I'd never sell it.  It is actually THE icon that got me hooked on B&O.

And you'd be absolutely amazed at how long it runs on a pocket AC inverter and a car battery.  I have run it this way through many a power outage.
