I just saw that there are beolab 3, mk2. Has anyone heard of an announcement or what the difference is between the mk1?

The woofers and ABRs were changed in September 2007 - supposed to be improved but sound quality seems the same. There are some small changes to the electrical chassis to compensate. The type number changed somewhat confusingly from 689X to 687X

    i see.

Dont know what ABR means, but i guess the woofers were probably replaced with stronger ones, since when loud the bl3s woofers work quite hard

ABR = Auxiliary Bass Radiator - the side bits - these are backwardly compatible and will fit the mark one BL3. Probably a change in supplier if truth be known!

I have Beolab 3 MKI and enquired about upgrading to MKII.  The cost to do the upgrade was $1800.00 USD.  The high cost they said was due to a change in the manufacturing process and that most of the components would have to be replaced.  I was absolutely astounded and of course decided it wasn't worth the cost. Its probably true that a change in supplier was also a major factor.

This is an area where B&O could do better.  They should send an email to registered users about upgrades and the cost when there are changes.  Sometimes the upgrades are very beneficial and sometimes they are not.

It would need new ABRs, a new woofer and new electrical chassis so I can understand the cost. The performance does appear to be very similar - the electrical changes are due to the different characteristics of the woofer.
