    Avant Purchase - some questions

So I picked up my avant from Nottingham - great dealer, delighted.....great service from the dealer!

We loaded the avant into the back seat of my car - removed the glass and it laid flat on a matress and duvet and was surrounded by pillows and blankets.....

Got it home and set it up the picture is amazing, a couple of small problems...

    Format 1

In Format 1, the picture edges don't seem straight, they bend at the top left and bottom right of the screen, not really noticeable, but I notice it! Any thoughts? could the tube have moved a little in transit? In Format 2 and 3, there is no problem and I can't quite believe the picture quality!!

    Sky box

I have my sky box distributing to the rest of the house.  If I set the box to 16:9 in picture settings and 4:3 for the second location, all the other 4:3 sets in the house have a squashed look, if it resets it to 4:3L, is there any way to keep 16:9 on the avant and not have the other sets with the squashed image

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Gary

Re: Avant Purchase - some questions

The first question will be one for somebody like Medogsfat to answer - it involves fiddling around with geometry settings which is not for the faint hearted...

RE the second question, the only real way around this is to take the 'second room RF feed' on the Sky box out into the other rooms separately unfortunately.

Dont use the SKY+ RF to the other room, use the Avant RF out instead.

Re: Avant Purchase - some questions

The Sky config allows you to specify whether your link-room TVs are 4:3 or 16:9, which fits the screen better...

Alex, sadly, it makes no difference if I use the RF1 or RF2 out, I get the same result on 2nd picture location......

    Really?

I'd do as Britops suggests then, use the Avant's RF out instead of the Sky Box's.

Re: Avant Purchase - some questions

The picture is unbelievable isn't it.

Hey i had the same issue and it was so very small, but as you said, I NOTICED it! hehe i ended up going into the service menu and adjusting the geometry to perfect the picture shape... this took DAYS and great caution. I also made sure that i wrote all of the values down before i did it.

Take utmost care if going down this avenue (and yes it can be scary)... but i did it and the result is pure satisfaction :D

Regarding second location picture format: There is a known problem with this. It seems Sky's latest software upgrade has stopped it working (although it is still there in the picture settings menu). Calls to Sky are answered by people who either know nothing about it or pretend not to. I contacted a local aerial contractor and they are very well aware of the fault but said "Sky don't listen to them". I'm afraid the box will output only one format until Sky do something about it.

No one else heard of the picture format problem? Maybe not all boxes are affected?

Re: Avant Purchase - some questions

I had this problem a while back, if the RF feed and control for Sky in the other rooms is from the Avant then it will always be 16:9. The way the Sky box works is that the second feed when connected to a second TV and set to 4:3 will only change to 4:3 when their magic eye is connected so you have to operate it through a Sky remote and not a Beo4.

Hope this makes sense - I think a way round it is to connect the RF out from the Avant to the RF in on the sky box then connect a sky magic eye to the second rf out and place it close to the IR eye connected to the Avant, then connect your second room to the RF out of the Sky box and tune the link channell to that. I know I had it working once but got fed up and bought a second Avant instead for the link room.

Re: Avant Purchase - some questions

I read this on another forum. Is this having to use a remote eye only with recent software? Why would they do it this way? If the box can only output one format at any one time?

According to my B&O dealer, aerial contractor and from TV link who make the magic eyes for Sky, the RF2 should output 4:3 when selected in the menu and is nothing to do with remote control. Sky technical have not much clue but they too insist you should not need a TV link eye to achieve a different format on RF2.

Maybe Rupert Murdoch knows a fix.

Re: Avant Purchase - some questions

The box as far as I know can only output one format at a time - if the first output is set to 16:9 and the second to 4:3 then 16:9 willbe selected when operated from the box itself or through the STBC, 4:3 will be selected when operated through the magic eye in the remote room. If you are controlling sky through a link system then it will be operated by the STB-C and hence goto 16:9.

If you have switched the box on from the link room then it will display 4:3 on all TV's similarly if someone then operates it from the main room then all the TV's will display 16:9.

Re: Avant Purchase - some questions

It certainly seems that way although the aerial company said that "second location picture format was working before but now it does not" indicates a recent change. They insist it was after a software upgrade.

The situation is not satisfactory at all. For e.g another person wants to watch the same Sky channel in another room on a different format TV. It also presents difficulties as you say with B&O link and other remote extenders like the powermid which I use.

Does changing the geometry apply to all formats or can I select each one?  My only issue is with Format 1

According to my service manual you need to adjust geometry for each format.
