    Beovision 3 or Avant

Hi everyone, at the moment I have a MX7000, 2x Beolab8000 and Beocenter 2. I was wondering what the best replacement would be for the MX7000 (in near future). Should I go for the Beovision 3 or the Avant?. Are there big differences between these 2?

    Thanx for any reply......

     Greetz Conan

Interesting choice. Without doubt, a 32 inch DVD Avant will set you back more than a 32 inch Beovision 3, but I suppose it depends on what you want to connect it to really? If you have separate sources you're happy with, and either a sideboard/unit you want to place a Beovision 3 on, or like the optional Beovision 3 stand (I don't, though I do like the looks of the Beovision 3 by itself), then you might want to go with the Beovision 3.

When faced with this choice at the beginning of the year, I went for a 28 inch RF Avant VCR in pearly black. I use a Playstation for the odd occasion when I want to watch DVDs, but mostly just watch Sky TV on it. The speakers are superb (better than those in the Beovision 3), and as my Avant is placed in a corner of a room, I think it looks wonderful and fills the space nicely. Plus, the rotating stand is always a nice feature to have when the TV is placed in a corner, as you can move it round depending on where you're sitting in the room.

It's going to be your call - either TV has the best picture you'll find on a CRT set. I've had lots of visitors ask me about whether my Avant is HD. I always smile at that one :)

PS - don't get the 28 inch Beovision 3. The chassis is the same as that in the MX series, whereas the 32 inch version uses the Avant chassis. This is reflected in the price of the sets.

In my opinion I would go for an Avant. Asthetically the Avant blends into the environment in which it is placed until you look at it. Whereas, if you have a Beovision 3 (again in my opinion) especially if on the stand, attention is drawn to it. I feel that you have to have modern furnishings for it not to look out of place.

Whist B&O items are conversation pieces and you are supposed to look at them, the Beovision 3 is garish as far as I am concerned.

This heavily depends on where and how it (BV3) is placed.

It can look AWFUL at certain angles. But if you're clever like me, it looks timeless. It is a good point here, the avant suits older more traditional home environments, BV3 more modern.

With your 8000's and the BC2, a BV3 on a sideboard or low bench will look like a better match and will function well, as you won't need to add a dvd player

I'm in exactly the same position, except I'm replacing an MX4000 on a motorised base......

I'm probably going to go Avant 32 RF VCR, keep the BC2 and BL8000 and trade my V8000!

    Good luck

I'm very happy with my BV3 and would echo comments above - needs to be BV3-32 and needs to be in modern surrounds. I have it in a modernly furnished room and looks great but also have a 1930's room with antique furniture etc where it looks out of place but where, I feel, an Avant might fit in well.

As I own a BV 3-32 I would recommend you this one Smile

In case you need an external set top box, a computer and/or a DVD player/recorder it has a stand to go with it!

Picture of my setup (sorry for the bad quality) attached.

The Avant needs a room with high ceilings to look its best. BV3 has the advantage of height placement options. It's a shame B&O did not offer the LX/MX as 16:9 versions. The Avant or BV3 will take over your room and are not as restful to the eye as the classic designs were. I replaced my LX with an Avant but miss the LX when it's switched off!

I suppose we all have our different opinions on what does or doesn't look good, but I find it hard to consider the Beovision 3 in any way fitting the above description.

Mmm. Never seen a bright yellow Avant before, but the bright yellow BV3 I saw was :P

I like the BV3, and would happily own one, but the Avant to me is an absolutely iconic design that still today looks bang (excuse the pun) up to date - particularly the RF version and its prescient nods to flat panel TVs.

I suppose when I say garish I mean that as far as I am concerned the Avant is understated (although perhaps less so with the green/red variants) whereas the Beovision 3 design is such that you cannot help but have your attention drawn to it. I am finding it very difficult to articulate this so perhaps I am not making much sense.

I will continue to ramble in a kind of stream of conciousness way hoping to make some sense of what I am trying to say:

A black avant blends into its surroundings, the beovison 3 to me looks like a robot with rotund stomach (when on its stand). The whole shutter mechanism which you pull up to gain access to the AV equipment placed inside looks far too cyberpunk like for my liking. In the right setting though I guess it would not stand out so much. To me it wouldn't look out of place as a prop in Akira (if it was FMV) or in The Matrix.

No doubt I will buy one at some point and grow to like it and then pretend that I never said any of this stuff!

I agree 100% with this articulate description

Even though i own the BV3 and have grown to love it (hated it at first) so much that each time i turn it on i cringe and pray it will continue to turn on and reveal that amazing picture everytime.

If i could have afforded it, i would have got a black AVANT 32" RF DVD... It's gorgeous, good value and you don't have to worry about cupboards or extras, but as i said, you have a beocenter 2! The BV3 will get along really well with it.

Hers an idea, send us a picture of your current room setup!!

    Ok Dave - check 'dis:

What you can't see here is my Beomaster 8000, Beogram CDX, Beogram 4002, Beolit 600 (1960s version), Terminal 3000, Beo 4, and Peter (my B&O Soldier). I think the Avant looks minty next to the older Beovox Pentas, and my lovely even older Jet Present 607, plus all the other B&O gear in the room that's mentioned above.

    Some of which is here...

You can just make out the Avant on the right. Now tell me the Avant isn't timeless next to 40 odd year's worth of B&O products! No way would a BV3 on the silly roller-shutter stand look as good!

Nice Pics! Its true, the Avant is a masterpiece and is timeless. Off its stunnig, on, the picture is amazing and the sound is incredible. I got a BV7-40, 2 weeks ago, after trading in my RF VCR Avant. I still miss it to this very day and will definitely get one when I get a bigger house. My dad still has his 32 DVD RF Silver so at least it still is in the family.

The BV3 is a great TV, it is. But the Avant is timeless and more prettier than any new BV will ever be! Even the BV7! ;)

Thanxx everyone for your input on this one.

The main question for me was, does the Avant beat the Beovision 3 big time in picture quality and sound or is the difference not that big??? I know the Avant is a bit cheaper second hand. (I think it is!!??)

    Hi Meng!

BV3-32 and Avant32 RF have the same chassis and picture tube. One thing that could make a visible difference is that the Avant had the coated anti-reflex screen fitted as standard whereas it was an optional extra on the BV3.
The BV3-28 is based on the 50Hz chassis of the BV1 and is definitely outperformed by the BV3-32 and the Avant

Soundwise the Avant is considered to be a bit better than the BV3-32 (larger cabinet were the speakers are fitted). Also the Avant has a dolby-module as standard (extra on BV3)

Not long ago I changed from an MX7000 to a BV3-32 and I don't regret it. As others said before, the design of the Avant is superb and imho on the way to become a B&O classic.
I also thought about an Avant but two reasons made me opt for the BV3-32:
       a) I my room setup the BV3-32 fits better (I have a TV-board where I can hide DVD-player, etc..)
       b) I got my BV3-32 a at bargain price.

    cheers

Waw, nice room, the avant is absolutely perfect there, and thats the first time i've liked the look of pentas... they look gorgeous

The BV3 videostand is ridiculous, just like the BV8 video stand. Ridiculous, ugly.

It's fascinating that the uplights compliment the B&O you have - wow! Looks really great. My set up is the total opposite to yours (and with down lights hehe)

If I lived where you live Dave, my uplights would point downwards too ;)

Thanks for your kind words. I like the BV3 on its own, just not with the stand. In my living room though, the only place was in a corner, and that's where the Avant looks great and is very practical with the rotating stand.

Pentas are great speakers, but look better away from corners and against plain decor in modern settings I think. Mine are Beovox, connected to my Beomaster 8000, so don't have the Beolab 150 amp at the bottom which makes them seem more squat. This probably makes them blend in just a little bit more :)

Ah very clever re: the lights! hehe i'm on the ball Big Smile

Of course, i didn't notice! The Beovox look in better proportion somehow. The BM8000 is reminiscent of the beosound 4, thats my opinion, very nice, and totally minimal for it's time. A corner would make the Avant seem slimmer so i see the logic. This would also be true with the other crt's...

I'm really starting to appreciate the older B&O
