Soundstage - speaker placement
I have experienced a very pleasent improvement of the sound of my favotite B&O system. Someone knows this is the Beolab 5000 of 1967 . My Beolab 5000 system is the Beolab 5000 - Beomaster 5000 - Beogram 3000 - Beovox 5000 speakers and the Beovox 2500 Cube speakers. I think the sound of this old classic system is really good and of course all kits are fully restored. The traditional setup in a room is like the picture shown here.

Re: Soundstage - speaker placement
The pictures I am trying to give an impression of the sound experience by adding colours to the pictures. The dark coloured part indicates the sound 'centre' of the soundstage experienced in the listening situation. I now decided to add an second pair of Beovox 2500 Cube's to my system. I would like the Cube's to be mounted under the ceiling. The Cube speakers can be mounted on the wall, under the ceiling or placed on a table or on your Beovox 5000 speakers. Now after this speaker extention I really experienced a very unexpected change of the soundstage of my system. I got a much improved extended sound picture, a much more clear stereo picture and a very transparent sound. Of course this improvement of the soundstage can be added to any system by using a speaker setup like the one I have used. The picture here shows (I hope) by the colours how the sound picture changed quite a bit. /Frede

Re: Soundstage - speaker placement
Fascinating! I take it that that is a Revox Reel to Reel, but what is the CD player? I had never thought of mounting the cubes as you have on the wall but thinking logically it makes sense. How many Beogram 3000s have you!?

Re: Soundstage - speaker placement
Hi Frede, hope you are well. Your placement of the extra cubes would appear to have hightened your sounstage. Working in a vertical plane is something I find very interesting since speaking with Dave Moulton. I, on the other hand, have widened my soundstage in a horizontal plane. Using the same set-up as yours (minus two cubes) I have achieved this by placing the cubes very wide apart. I have my 5000s each side of my central chimney *** (just 2 meters apart) which is not ideal. I sit at the back of the room in a central position (3 meters back) for serious listening, and the 5000s are too close together to make the equilateral triangle that would be optimum. I get round this by placing my cubes half way up the length the side wall and quite high up. The ghost sound picture then comes from the corners of the room. Andy T.

Re: Soundstage - speaker placement
The CD player looks like a Rega Apollo - absolutely excellent player...
Interesting use of the cubes! Would help to add some height to the soundstage - something I really like about the BeoLab 1s.

At this point of time I have 4 Beogram 3000 with the Thorens TD 124 MKII. 3 pcs of which I have mo intentions of selling one for sale. I have a very good source here who can supply at least 10 more if I need them. But thats a nother story . The reel to reel is a Revox (of course) the B77 MKII. A wonderfull 'master piece' from Revox. What is my problem is, I cannot explain clearly what that arrangement did to the sound, it is really fantastic, I really wish I could make a presentation for you all. The intention of the Beovox was actually a setup to show the different ways of mounting the Cube - but I really got a new dimension in sound. /Frede

Re: Soundstage - speaker placement
Yes -you are right, the placement of the extra 2 cubes really have hightened the soundstage of the sound. In the vertical plane as you say. As above - I would like to demonstate it for you if I could, because it is not that easy to tell in words (for me - sorry), but the result is really interesting. You are all invited to Venø to experience the sound, I love it. To day I have been listening to two recordings.... "The Rite of Spring" as 'Soundproof ' has described very well in the latest B&O magazine. The CD recording recording quality is really someting. But I also listened to Elvis Plesley. For once a qulity CD from mr. Presley. I have really enjoyed the system - please come and tell me your findings. I have a glass of redwine ready for you /Frede

Re: Soundstage - speaker placement
I haven't listened to the 2500s anywhere else but in your listening room, Frede, and there it was quite enjoyable! Your experience has me nodding, though. I have been fooling around with channeling L/R to my rear surrounds, but only the top mid and highs, and somewhat lower than how the signal is piped through the front speakers. The result is as you describe it - an increased spatiality to the sound -- sources are still placed in front, but the sound is more "right" somehow - I think it is because the highs create the impression of having been reflected off the back walls? Just speculating.
The Q-sound effect does something similar, manipulating the high frequencies in order to create projection into the listening space. http://www.qsound.com/index.htm I'd say that B&O were quite ahead of their time with the Cubes - the theory being that high-frequencies travel farther and are reflected more -- by projecting them in "all" directions, they created a believable sound.

It was posted over a year ago, i'm sure that's why you can't see the pictures.
I suppose you could PM the member who posted them Jeff, and ask him to re-post them.

Thanks everyone... sounds like this may be a thread of interest to others...
I think this was a case of a thread (the pics) that was consumed by the site cutover, when a lot of pics were sent out to pasture...
I assumed that Mr. Keith might be able to restore them, short of Mr. Frede having to re-upload them.
Hope it works out!

Re: Soundstage - speaker placement
I will try to find the pictures as requested, please excuse me if it takes a little time.
I am still using the 'setup or speaker placement and enjoying fully the improved sound stage. I ahve even costumers who have bought 2 set (4 pcs) of Beovox 2500 Cube to experience the exelent sound.

Many thanks Frede! Take your time!
I am very interested, having finally (after many travails) joined the 5000 club!
++++EDIT++++
Thanks so much Frede, I can see the pics!
Glad you were able to reload them. In my mind's eye, I was expecting a plan view, rather than the elevation view. Very interesting! The problem I have now would be sourcing at least (1) pair of 2500's, let alone (2)
As I had posted in another thread that you participated in, I am really curious about other speaker options beyond the typical 3000/5000/2500 as I currently have none... time for a listing in the "Wanted" section!?!?
Have you, or anyone else used the 6006 "spread box" with the 5000 system? How might that play a roll (schematically and accoustically)?
I am very much looking forward to enjoying my new 5000 system, and would love to get the most out of it!

Re: Soundstage - speaker placement
I found it all and I have now re-loaded the pcitures. Please see at the top of this thread.
But ....
I would like to invite you to come and listen to the sound in real life - at Venø, you are welcome
edit:
I would like to add, that the extra 2 Cube speakers added a significant part to the horzontal plan of the soundstage, not 'only' the vertical.!

Many thanks again!
Your warmth, generosity, and hospitality precedes you, as I have witnessed on other threads!
Sadly, I am on the wrong side of the pond! When I am next over there, well, I would certainly love to look you up and share some vino in Venø!
