Beogram 4002 - repair or sell?

I have a Beogram 4002 which will not start, but I'm not the techno-savvy type to fix it myself. If I can get it to run again, how good is it compaired to modern turntables, such as those combined with an mp3 recorder for reviving one's old vinyl records? Would you think it worthwhile to get it repaired at a shop, or better sell it to one of you enthusiasts? /Olle

Much better made than most modern decks. You will need a cartridge if you don't have one , and this can be expensive. Very easy to use and very beautiful - it can be a centre piece on a cabinet. In sound quality terms, you will need to spend a fair bit to match it. Certainly considerably more than you will get from selling the 4002. I use one for digitising my LPs.

    Welcome to Beoworld

    Were are you located?

The closer you are to Denmark the better as the qualified service is mostly aviable here and not in any other country that much.

Modern turntables? When working right way better than newer ones. The thing to think about is the cartridge. If  it needs to be changed it will cost more than fixing the 4002. They are aviable and sounds really good but the price is high.

As Mp3 is a compressed format the vinyl will sound better. Shops will proberly not fix it or take a high price just to locate faults and nmost of the time saying a part is needed that they can't get.

If you can get it to Copenhagen member Dillen can get it back in working order. Just send him a pm.

The UK does have a few resident specialists as well! And in Denmark, Frede Kristensen at Claasic Audio is very highly recommended - as is acknowledged in the latest B&O catalogue. I agree about Martin as well of course!

To Friedmett: I'm located in South Sweden less than 4 hrs from Copenhagen. What's the 'cartridge'? The needle?

To all: Thanks for your helpful answers!

Yes. The 4002 should have either a MMC4000 or a MMC20EN cartridge fitted. If it has a MMC20CL fitted, that is a bonus. However it might need replacing.

Re: Beogram 4002 - repair or sell?

My cartridge says it's an MMC 20 S. Is that good enough?

Why am I so ignorant? The thing is, I inherited this TT from a fairly rich "snob" who passed away a couple of years ago, so I can't ask him why or how it doesn't work, or whether the cartridge is worn or not. It looks allright under the high-power magnifying glass. I gently brushed it free from dust.

I guess the busy man hadn't very much time to listen to music. :-)

The MMC20S is the most basic of the cartridges. It will work fine though. I never use them as they produce more sibilance in my experience, which I hate, and they are black so don't match the arm.

You have never said what happens exept it will not start right?

This means there is power and maybe light but the arm does not move?

If the MMC20S is ok when playing the best thing to do do is to bring it to Dillen in Copenhagen. You have less travel time than me.

A no functional 4002 is not worth much and the MMC20S is not going to give any big value either.

Since you are close to Denmark you might find a MMC20EN/CL on dba.dk which is still good or maybe beoworld. Avoid ebay!

It pays of in the end keeping these Beograms running as the demand for working units will always be there. It can also start the infamous Beovirus which most of the members here can't be cured for. We are lost in that area.

Re: Beogram 4002 - repair or sell?

Thanks to your tips I got in contact with Dillen, and he kindly agreed to let me take the Beoheap to him for a check-up.

Since the man I inherited it from is not among us any more, I don't know how it doesn't work. There is no light when I connect it.

A new cartridge is about 500 USD!

    Cheers, Olle
