Are you using a NAS to store your media?

I am looking to replace two 500GB USB HDs that are slowly filling up with somethign I can hide in the close.

Is anyboy using a NAS and if so why? I am looking at Netgear/Infrant Readynas. The Duo would do, however I do not really need the raid level / protection and it seems one can't switch that off. The NV is very expensive and is supposed to be a bit loud.

Any experience? I would use it mostly to house my Itunes Library.

I am using a Buffalo Terastion. Work really great. Differenz Raid levels possible (I can use 750 GB of the 1 TB storage).

I recently purchased a D-Link DNS-323. Although I only have 1 500g HD, will will support up 1T with RAID options. Connected to the network via ethernet.

So far, it's pretty quiet and the Mac and PC can see and access the drive. Only problem was that when the power goes out, the unit re-assigns itself a new IP and them becomes invisible to the network.

Is it getting its IP from a DHCP server? In that case, have you tried to set it manually? Or is it forgetting its manual IP?

I would recommend reading the reviews of NASes at SmallNetBuilder, they’re good! And they have nice performance charts as well…

I settled on the readynas duo.

While I think I can run over the 1000GB over the next 18 month I think I can manage by removing what I don't need. While I though long about the Readynas NV it makes more noise and is probably much more then I need. All I want is a shared place for my videos and itunes library.

I will report back how music streaming to my ATV will work. I am planning on re-ripping my favourite CDs into Apple Lossless and house them on it.

      Cheers

I settled on the readynas duo.

The ReadyNas Duo is very nice, and a good NAS, but a big brother to the Duo (the Pro) is about to be released in the next month or so, it has 6 bays instead of 2. If you could hold out for that, it maybe the NAS to go for altho it is likely to be dear(ish). But you could still start with 2 drives (like the Duo in Raid 1) then add more drives when you need the space, and use the XRaid to migrate to Raid 5/6.

There is talk on the Infrant forums of the possibility of even taking the 2 drives from the Duo and putting them in the Pro, so that may even be an option in 9+ months when you are fast running out of space...

    All in all, good choice

I considered the NV which has 4 ports, the Pro is probably even more expensive. Thing is, the Duo might be a bit better for home use since it is designed around silent operation.

I might sell it down the line without drives and upgrade to the bigger brothers, I read that as well that you can just take the drives and transfer them.

I will post how i goes, I am hoping it comes by next weekend.

Re: Are you using a NAS to store your media?

Any ideas on how Beosound5 will blend in with an Apple / NAS solution?
Do you think that BS5 will be able to access an iTunes library?
Will there be a way of integrating BS5 into an Apple/iTunes world?
    Or is this just overkill?
