I have just purchased a 5005 and it seemed to play fine for a few days, but I recently noticed a few problems and wondered what it would take to fix them:

1. The mute switch does not seem to work - I see this may be a common problem - are there replacement switches available?

2. When the pickup arm moves toward the center (last few minutes only), the platter will start to rub on the wire pulley and the wire pulley seems to almost engage the gear below it - enough to make it move slightly.

3. Finally, the pickup arm doesn't detect the end of the album so it can automatically return either - unless I press the stop button.

 I have the service manual, but could not really tell how to correct his problem. I also have a 3000 to use as a comparison and can not really see the reason why the 5005 is having the problems it is. Can anyone provide some advice?

1. The mute switch is showing signs of lack of usage.
Use the Beogram and it will probably fix itself unless something is physically broken or put together wrong.

2. Adjust the deck height. The service manual will tell you how.

3. Probably also something that will correct itself with normal use.
If not, you will have to check if something is misaligned or broken around the lift/lower cam wheel.

Thanks. I exercised the mute switch quite a bit and it seems to be working now. I also went through the photo sensor adjustment for the pick-up arm lift-lower operation and I seem to have found the sweet spot now, so issues 1 and 3 are fixed. I tried the deck height adjustment and at first it seemed to work, but then after a few more tries, the rubbing noise returned. It only happens for a short segment on each revolution. I have a Beogram 3000 and compared the mechanisms and the only difference I could see was when the wire pulley causes the tonearm to approach the center, the gear below it seems to move slightly, but not engage. Is there any adjustment available for wire pulley or any other suggestions that could help me?

 Thanks for your input as well. I'm not trying to be difficult, but I just made the adjustments you suggested and I got it to between 2.5 mm and 3 mm all around with the arm moved toward the center. It still makes the rubbing noise when I get to the last inch of the album. Could there be any other reason for the platter to rub against the wire pulley? The transport screws are backed out, releasing the suspension. Then there is the problem of the wire pulley interferring with the gear below it. Is there an adjustment for that?

Is the wire following the same route on both turntables?

Check the electrical cables to the carriage. Are they moving upwards as the carriage moves and interfering with moving parts of the turntable?

Its possible the desk got a bit of a shunt in transport. Can you gently pull the innards forward?  Does sthe problem still occur?.

This crude method was recommended to me and it solved a similar problem. BTW I was not so gentle in the end...

I checked the wire between the 5005 and the 3000 and they are the same. I'm not sure what I should be pulling forward, but I tried to move the wire pulley and the gear below it by pushing them in different directions to no avail. I could not see any object cought in the gears either. Something is causing the wire pulley and gear to interfere starting about half way through its travel and then causing the wire pulley to offset slightly during its rotation and come in contact with the platter. I'm thinking about removing the C clip and lifting the wire pulley out to see what is causing the problem, but before I do will that be creating more of a problem than I already have? Is there an adjustment or is there a screw holding the wire pulley shaft from below that may need to be tightened? Thanks for all of your advice so far.

To be more precise, using the desciptions in the Service Manual, the stud on the bottom of the Wire Pulley (1634) is interfering with the Arm for Switch (1608) half way through its rotation. Toward the end of the record, the Wire Pulley starts rubbing against the Fly Wheel (1601). I have the deck height adjusted to 3 mm with the arm near the end of the record. It looks like the stud is supposed to move against the arm, but it is meeting with resistance and seems to ride above the arm, causing it to bind against the flywheel. I would appreciate any suggestions to correct this problem. Can somebody explain how to adjust that part of the unit?
