Multichannel SACD Audio and Beosystem 3
Finally SACD caught my attention to feed my Lab5 with some high quality audio.... I do understand that the BS3 does not accept analoge 5.1 signals and SACD player do not ouput digital audio signals (except Denon Link 3rd Edition or the iLink) It looks like that there are some player on the market which outut SACD stereo and multi channel trough HDMI. The Pioneer LX50 is one of them and looks quite promissing. Does anyone know if the BS3 accepts SACD through HDMI? Karsten

Re: Multichannel SACD Audio and Beosystem 3
Some models of the PS3 will, indeed, send 5.1 SACD via HDMI and will even send 2-channel SACD via the optical cable since one of the PS3 firmware updates. However, beware that the 40 GB PS3 does NOT support SACD! Shop carefully for your PS3 before you make the purchase.

Thanks for the advise, I was not aware that the PS3 supports SACD and I will take a closer look (and get Blueray for "free" as well :-))) ) Karsten

Re: Multichannel SACD Audio and Beosystem 3
One drawback with the "old" PS3 is the level of noise....not sure if I would like to have that one in my living room :-( But did anybody test the PS3 SACD multichannel with the BS3? Karsten

Re: Multichannel SACD Audio and Beosystem 3
Allow me to ask, since I'm an old fart who's confused by these youngsters and their electronic gizmos... What is the deal with the Playstation 3? I've only had experience with one unit, which tended to reach temperatures comparable to the surface of the sun, and which turned on what must have been an industrial fan that could be heard even with sound on. So has this been fixed? Considering the awful performance of every single Blu-Ray player we've tried in our shop, we've been trying to find a unit that we feel confident recommending to clients. Obviously the fact that it is first and foremost a video game console may be an issue for some, but with the right adaptors it can be controlled by the PUC, play Blu-Ray & SD Discs, and if it can play SACD that could only be perceived as a bonus. Could someone briefly comment on perhaps the evolution of the PS3 since its introduction and what advantages and faults stand out? (I'd ask someone at Best Buy, but they're practicing sleeping standing up). Thanks in advance!

Re: Multichannel SACD Audio and Beosystem 3
Trip: I'll start with the faults of the ps3: -It has no built-in IR sensor; therefore, it's necessary to add an external IR sensor via the USB port. Even with the add-on IR sensors, we can't power the unit on/off with a remote. -The fan is a bit noisy, but we're going to hide the PS3 inside one of the gorgeous B&O brushed aluminum cabinets, right? :-) Now the pros: -It's one of the best-priced BD units on the market. -It is EXTREMELY easy to upgrade the firmware. More so than most BD players that I've found. -Sony is providing firmware updates (usually every month), adding more and more functions and keeping it more up-to-date than most BD players. -The start-up time for a BD disk is faster than most BD players. -The sony engineers keep coming up with more and more settings to tweak the performance. -There is a sizable built-in hard drive. -It also plays SACD. -It plays divx movies. -You can stream media from either a PC or a MAC, including iTunes files, photos, and divx movies. -The eject and power buttons are touch-sensitive. Very B&O in style, in my opinion -- like the Beosystem 4500. -When you insert a CD, it gets the album info and track names from the internet. -It even upconverts standard CDs!! This really is the media center that the Beomedia 1 should have been...

Re: Multichannel SACD Audio and Beosystem 3
I should point out two additional flaws with regard to using the PS3 with a Beosystem 1: -It is not possible to do the initial PS3 set-up with it connected to a Beosystem 1. You won't be able to get a video signal. You must first configure the video settings of the PS3 with it connected to another tv. This is actually due to the quirky video signal detection of the BS1 and the fact that you can't get an initial 480i signal via the BS1 component input. -Most PS3 games are offered in 720p but not 1080i. The PS3 will not upconvert a 720p signal but will only downconvert it to 480p. I don't use my PS3 for games...but I suppose this would be irritating to those people who do.

Re: Multichannel SACD Audio and Beosystem 3
I'd like to add that the PS3 is the best integrated disc/multimedia device for integration into the Beosystem 3.
Yes, I'm not happy with the noisy fan and the look - but, where are the alternatives ? Is there any disc player on the market that can read BD, SACD, DVD, CD, DivX and many more formats and that is connectable to B&O ?
B&O won't produce a BluRay player nor a SACD player. The audiophile Denon DVD-A1UD was announced recently and will be available for 3999 €. It's still unknown if it will be controllable with the Beo4. Does anybody know more ?

Re: Multichannel SACD Audio and Beosystem 3
Correct me if I'm wrong but SACD support was dropped from PS3's fairly early on (after the 60Gb player I believe) for cost reduction reasons and to boost the sales of PS3.
As good as the PS3 is, and as quiet as the newer models are, they no longer support SACD (or PS2 hardware compatiblity, which I believe was dropped at the same time as SACD support).
Generally speaking, you aren't learning much if your lips are moving.

Re: Multichannel SACD Audio and Beosystem 3
AFAIK, SACD capability was dropped only in the smaller 40 GB version of the PS3. Currently I mainly use my PS3 for listening to SACD's. After I received my Beolab 5, I can hear how bad most of the regular CD's are recorded.

Hi Flappo,
yes, here is their current multi-format player:
http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products/42/84/222/DV-610AV-K/index.html
It's small an has many features. Does anybody know if this device is connectable to a Beosystem 3 ?
Unfortunately it doesn't have BluRay support.

Puncher:

Almost correct. It was dropped after the second generation, so the first generation (20 GB and 60 GB model) and the second generation (2007 80 GB model) play SACD; the later models (40 GB, 2008 80 GB model, 160 GB) don't.
See the PS3 SACD FAQ.
