Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
Just can't get on with it. What is it worth?

Evidently it hasn't been set up properly! They're fantastic, but need to be configured properly, which can be difficult on your dealer's behalf (he/she can't know exactly what you want).

Re: Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
I am really glad you all like your 5's, but it does not work for me. Part of the reason I enjoy B&O is because 1 remote does everything. Not anymore! I need my old long thin one and the 5. AHHHHHH! To give my dealer credit, he did set it up - even for Apple TV but boy the thing drives me nuts. So, how do I advertise it on the FOR SALE forum? IMHO it is only worth throwing in the bin but should I ask £275?

Pricing is it tricky since it has to be reprogrammed for which a dealer will charge. JK

Re: Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
You will never need the Beo4 as well as the Beo5 - the Beo5 can do everything the Beo4 does and heck of a lot more. It just needs configuring correctly!

I can use the 4 in the dark without looking at it - I can't do that with the 5. I can use the 4 one handed - I can't do that with the 5. Friends can pick up the 4 and work any element of my set up without my help - can't do that with the 5. The 5 is crap with Apple TV so I still need a second remote so I see no need whatsoever for the 5. Sometimes "improvements" are not all they are cracked up to be. Another example of this is the 2007/8 Yamaha R1. Yeh great design and inovation and all that but the fly by wire throttle is crap to use - just like the over rated 5. That said I am glad most people like them. Now if it had a decent interface like the iPod Touch I might think differently.

Re: Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
Totally agree with Alex, MrAnders-son, and the others. I can use the 4 in the dark without looking at it
I cannot use the beo4 in the dark without looking at it because the on-screen LIST commands, you do?.
I can use the 4 one handed - I can't do that with the 5 I use the beo5 only one handed, everyday, all the time. Friends can pick up the 4 and work any element of my set up without my help - can't do that with the 5 That's logic if your beo5 cannot control correctly your B&O set up.
My beo5 can control ALL my B&O equipment lot better than my beo4, because it's correctly configured.
Sorry to read you're not able to do it the same with yours. Anyway thanks to you an "ebay-er" will be very happy soon.

Re: Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
disclaimer: i do not own a beo5... so, what that is worth... i do own (4) beo4's ...and i do like them! however! i think that the big stinker is the fact that "YOU", the consumer, have no control over your investment. i would have bought a beo5 yesterday if "I" had control over it... i, in fact, use a logitech harmony 880. i have "COMPLETE" control over it. will it replace the beo4's? not necessarily, but it certainly has pre-empted my purchase of a beo5. ...the above is why i selected the beo5 in the "worst b&o design" thread w/ the caveat that if they get it sorted... (i.e) offer some control to "US" -then i would consider it. p.s. i am 4+ hours from my nearest dealer -can anyone rightly expect me to travel back and forth to get my beo5 sorted when i can adjust my logitech in +/- 5 minutes over the 'net??? or, just use my beo4(s)???

Re: Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
It would be good if B&O could offer some kind of 'remote config' facility. It could be relatively easily done, meaning a configuration file is sent to the user over the internet via email or whatever, and the user downloads a little tool from B&O which allows them to upload the information to their Beo5. After all, the Beo5 itself isn't needed to do the configuration, the Beo5 config tool essentially emulates a Beo5 allowing you to test it out.

Re: Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
While respecting Alex's opinion, I find that I feel quite the contrary regarding the claim that one would never need a Beo4 after getting a Beo5. The Beo5 is indeed a very versatile remote. It's especially useful when used in conjunction with a lintronic code converter. You can create very organized menus for the Xbox, PS3, and many other non-B&O products. However, I've had my Beo5 since Christmas and have discovered that I still reach for the Beo4 on the coffee table for most basic functions such as TV, DVD, CD, etc. I find that the Beo4 is so perfectly balanced in the hand. Also, it's so easy to press the buttons without ever looking at the remote. Perhaps that's because I've used the Beo4 for so long that the layout of the buttons is memorized and intuitive. It's certainly true, however, that the Beo5 is great for organizing menus for the non-basic functions.

Re: Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
I love my Beo5. My dealer configured mine and I can control my B&O and my non-B&O stuff with it perfectly. I think that if a Beo5 does not control everything you want, then the problem is the configuration, not the remote. It is true that the one needs to look at the Beo5 to use some functions, but for most of the time, I use mine without looking at it, with only one hand. Alex, IIRC, B&O had planned to release a costumer version of the configuration tool, but as the CEO changed and they had other plans, the project was deleted. (I think I read this on this forum).

Yes Tom, you love your Beo5, but i resigned totally from Beo5 like discribed in the german thread. I would prefer only ONE remote control - BO4 - to control my B&O and other equipement, not TWO ot them.

I don't know why people think they need two remotes? The Beo5 can do everything the Beo4 can, and heck of a lot more on top.

But is it as easy to use as the Beo4? I haven't tried the Beo5, but in the early 90s a bought a bl7000 and a bl5000, and in the end I only used the bl5000 since it was easier to grab the bl5000 and change tv channel etc without looking at the remote - I only used the bl7000 for programming purposes, and even then I often used the bl5000 instead. It was easier. I guess it could be the same situation with the beo5 if it isn't 100% perfect.

Re: Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
The most common buttons you use on the Beo4 are the arrows, colours and volume - which are all 'hands on' buttons on the Beo5. Very well designed IMO...

Must confess that my Beo5 is used mainly as a paperweight! And with Richard's lovely metal stand, it is a very good one!

Re: Beo5 - what a piece of junk.
Sounds like you should have more of a play with the config tool - I've managed to get it running on a Mac (under Parallels at the moment, works great, looking at getting a completely new tool natively under OS X) and while it's no way near bug-free, there is always a work-around to get it to do what you want!

Is item 170231211945 definitely your Beo5? If so, no wonder it didn't work...
