    What should I buy?

    Hi,

I'm using Beolab 4 speakers at my PC and now I want to buy a BeoSound system to play cds, radio and maybe iPod. The only problem is, that I can't decide what to buy:

    1. Beosound 4 to be connected with my BL4's and an Airport Express to connect my Macbook

    2. Besound 1 to play CDs and radio, maybe later Airport Express and keep my BL4's for the mac

     What would you choose?

PS: price is not really a factor (as long as it's under 2200€)

If my budget was limited, I'd go for the BS1. BS4 (which I own), is decent, but I'm not a big fan of all the cabling that's loose at the back, particularly when using it with DAB.

And what about the sound? Does the Beosound 1 sound better than the BL4's? Is the bass better (subwoofer in the middle)?

The BeoSound 1 doesn't go as loud as the BeoLab 4s, but it's a better performer in some ways... Exceptionally good piece of kit IMO.

If I were you though, I would go for the BeoSound 4, and then later upgrade to BeoLab 4000s (the difference is well... like night and day).

Are the 4000's much better? I also thought about buying a pair of Beolab 3 and replacing my BL4's... but the price

The BeoLab 4000s are almost incomparably better. They're one of the best balanced compact speakers on the market.

BeoLab 3s are then a step up again...

    Why not recommend the BL9's?

Bear in mind the original post - he has EUR 2200 to spend,.

I know - and a pair of BeoLab 4000s can be picked up for that price ex-demo.

Bear in mind I said get the BS4 because you can then later upgrade the speakers - something you can't do with the BeoSound 1.

I too would recommend buying BeoSound 4, connected to your BeoLab 4s, and then upgrade to more powerful BeoLabs when you have a bit more cash. BeoLab 4000s would be an excellent buy, or perhaps BeoLab 8000s or BeoLab 3s with a bit more saving. Yes - thumbs up

I would also consider an Ouverture and BeoLab 2500s. This would easily be in your budget and you would still be able to upgrade and/or add to this setup in the future.

    From leftfield:

Bearing in mind your budget, how about something vintage? You could pick up some Beolab Pentas and a decent Beocentre 9000 within your budget. The Pentas will blow away all of the other speakers mentioned above, and I suspect that the Beocentre will go down as one of the finest B&O designs ever - not sure time will be so kind to the Beosound 4, but we'll have to see :)

Also, you'll be able to listen to the radio, and use the Aux port to connect to your iPod.

    Re: What should I buy?

BL4s to Pentas is a bit of a leap - not just in terms of sound but also in terms of size (even more so).

BL4000s are an excellent pair of speakers - so often overlooked.

I would go for the BS4. There sure are better systems, but if you are on a budget, it is the best choice, if a second hand BS is not an alternative???

2200 Euros?  Pentas and a stack system (6500 or 7000) or beocenter.  My Pentas, 4500 system, and 6500 system all cost me less than 2200 Euros combined.

    Re: What should I buy?

    I also suggest adding a Beosound4 + BL4000s.

You will eventually want to buy BL3s or higher for technical/audio/ego reasons but the 4000s are awfully close to the BL3s and are equally impressive to look at visually.  They would make excellent Link room speakers down the road if you ever decided to upgrade.  The biggest advantage I see with the 4000s is that if you decided to build a cost effective surround system they would be extremely versatile, flexible and beautiful.  Once I added my BL3s to the Surround system I found that I really needed to stick with other Acoustic Lens speakers for them all to match well.  This meant an much higher per component cost.

Hope you don't have the BL 4 PC-version, which means there are no input for powerlink.

I love the ´"if my budget was limited" bit referring to anything up to €2200!

No, I bought the normal ones, because I always wanted to have a complete system.

For the used systems: I would like to buy one but I don't have the room for Pentas (I'm still at school) and also my dad who pays half doesn't want me to buy used things (don't know why). He says I should go for the BL3's, but the price is high, even if I sell my BL4's and get a 10-15% discount.

Hey - until I moved house recently, I barely had room for Pentas, so fair enough. If you are interested in older B&O stuff, there are lots of nice pieces of equipment you can pick up for not much money to start a collection A nice 1970s Beolit radio or similar springs to mind.

Someone else I'm sure will be along to advise you on how to best spend your money on new equipment. I've always believed in the 'buy the best you can afford' maxim, so I would lean towards BL3s if you can get them. Why not try getting these used or on a trade in from your dealer?

    Re: What should I buy?

BS4 is a good choice overall, very flexible and around the same price as BS1.

And yes 4000's are frighteningly good, as well as a bargain (second hand). I have BS4 with BL4000 as a stepping stone until i can afford ALT speakers...

BS1 is great for a small quiet room, very good package, but you just can't turn it up, it distorts shockingly

    Re: What should I buy?

I'm a bit "in love" with the BS1's design and I think It should sound at least as good as my Beolab4. The system is supposed to be installed in my bedroom (17 sqm) so sound should be good. But the main thing I like about it is, that I can lift it up from the floorstand, take it with me to use it on the terrace (we have power sockets there). And when I have more money next year I can go for a pair of BL4000 or BL3.

I think you've found your answer.  Buy what you love...

I really enjoy my BS1.  It was my first B&O product, and it's been my trusty office companion for 7 years.  I like it as much today as I did when I bought it.  Yes, you'll get better sound with BL4000s (I have these) or BL3s (wish I had these), but you can't easily take these out on the terrace, now can you?  It's a very nice package.  The distortion mentioned above only show up (to my ears) at near maximum volume - similar to other active B&O speakers (BL5 and 9 excepted).  I do sometimes wish it had masterlink.

    Re: What should I buy?

I was at my local B&O dealer an hour ago and I have to say some things:

    1. Beolab 4000 sound awful (cold, like tin box)

    2. Beosound 1 sounds good, but the difference to my BL4's is minor

    3. I will go for the Beolab 3! Amazing sound and looks, I'll have to earn some money, but they're worth it. I will probably be able to buy them in October. They beat the pants off the 2200€ Dynaudio-system I also listened to.

Thank you for all your posts...

BeoLab 4000s sound cold and awful? Surprise Maybe they had only just been set up? I've always found them to sound very warm, natural and colourful.

Have you heard the "new" BL4000s?  I haven't, but comments like this (and a few others) make me wonder if their recent change was not for the better.
