Stripping out old Avant Speakers for future Surround Sound....

In the world of recycling and being green an all that, could you:

Get an old avant that somebody will pay you just to take it away 'coz it ain't full hd (yawn) get it home, extract the active pair of loudspeakers (that are apparantly a cross of Beolab 2500/ BeoLab4000), make a nice little box for them, then solder a powerlink connection & mains power and bob's your uncle use them as 2 reasonably powerful B&O surround speakers that would work great with my BV3?!

     Or is it impossible? :(

Or do I stick to my original plan which is even more difficult....

I have no idea but I like the way your thinking, very innovative - good luck anyway as you keep coming across these 'uneconomical to repair' Avants now.

I have wondered about this too.

Any older Avant that has a blown tube is probably headed toward a skip as the tube would cost so much more than the TV would be worth, but the Audio system must be worth saving.

Hopefully someone more expert than me will be along in a minute!

    Great idea.

And following on from this, can someone please confirm whether the speakers in the 32" varient is the same as those in the 28"?

    Thanks

I would say this would be a viable project provided you have the 32" VCR version (28" is a little different)

Below is a block diagram and as you can see it only uses +/- 20 volts, so you could use a seperate power supply, using the AVANT power supply maybe somewhat difficult. But module 10 & 11 are the key parts and they would be easy to remove an use.

    brilliant!

    someone please do this!

though avants are NOT present in the same volumes here in the states... i do have a mx5000 that is having some tube issues, hmmm... wonder what the viability of using its speakers would be?

I did it but was unable to start up the original power supply PCB from the Avant. That's why I made my own +/-20V power supply which is switched on and off by a MOSfet (low current drain) and some other components. I implemented this speaker system in my BV5/Beosystem 3 combination as the center speaker.

Works great but slightly lower ouput then my BL3/BL8000 surround speakers. This could be tuned in the sound menu.

Would it be possible to use the Dolby Digital card from Avant with 3rd. party TV.

I think it would be possible with a few small modifications..

More interesting project: Leave the Avant with the blown tube intact below the shoulders and take the tube out. Replace it with the appropriate size LCD monitor. I'd really be interested in seeing this!

I'm also waiting for someone to empty out the gorgeous BeoVision 5 and give it proper HD guts! It seems fairly easy considering how the plasma is mounted inside.

I have in storage a 28" Avant which I was/am planning to do this modification to. Just need to get around to doing it. Will also do a colour change to white at the same time.

Which brings me onto my more challenging project:

32" Avant with a full HD LCD, fed by a mac mini (mounted just behind the back of the 'wall' of the avant) which for the final touch is controlled by my iPhone... and (possibly) having been inspired by Lee's white BeoLab 2, I'll be treating my Avant to a nice white suit!

Oh and did I mention my Overture that will be getting the tape deck taken out and replaced with an Apple dock placed in it for my iPod nano?

    fun ahead....

    Yep.

Our projects seem very similar as I am also looking at hooking up a mac. I will be using the Avant as a computer monitor as I have a RF Avant as my main TV.

    I love your ideas!!!!

I have also an older Avant and when I think that this thing could be white, my iphone is the remote and the Overture has an ipod dock...... Great!

Please post some photos from your projects. Many of us would enjoy this.

Hi, I have a 28" avant vcr. It is on its way to be destroyed on Friday but I couldn't just let those amazing speakers go. I took out the whole speaker cabinets and the cables between them and also the two amplifiers on the side of the tv. Is there anything else I would need from the 28" to get these working?

    Cheers

I'm sure that  I saw a converted LCD Avant on eBay earlier in the year.

There were Avant speaker modules (from 28") for sale on eBay [here], (didn't sell at £55)

There must surely be a market for converted Avants in the long-term, particularly as CRT supplies dry-up and LCD/LED screens become very cheap.

Re: Stripping out old Avant Speakers for future Surround Sound....

I have a 32" Philips LCD TV that I don't know what to do with, so I'm just waiting on my brother to throw out his old Avant 32" with video, so I can make a project out of it like in Cooldudes link, but with the screen integrated into the original casing, and with Beo4 control.

I have a 32" Avant RF DVD, but I would never take that apart Wink
