    BeoVision & Dolby Digital 5.1

Is it a must to have a digital Audio input (HDTV has such) to have the possibility to listen to the full 5.1 Dolby Digital sound for transmited channels like with DVD (built in a BeoVision)?

May depend what country you are in, for the uk Dolby Digital 5.1 is only transmitted on  HD channels and these are only on Sky HD or HD cable services.

If you are referring to the actual connection then I believe yes you need a digital audio input ie spdif for sound or hdmi for sound and picture.

    Cheers

Sky+ now transmits Dolby Digital on quite a few films now (when you view info will have DD) All you need is a fibre optic to co-ax converter and the TV (if fitted with the Dolby Digital board) will detect the signal and do the rest.

I have just done this and the difference is amazing, my Avant detects the signal, displays Dolby Digital on the display and turns on my rear speakers, I have not stopped recording DD films since!!

Doesn't the audio get sent via the HDMI lead? I thought that was the point of HDMI?

The Sky box also has Digital fibre optic output, B&O sets (certainly my Avant) have inputs for a digital signal via co-ax only therefore the signal needs to be converted from fibre optic digital co-ax.

    Hope this helps Lee

HDMI contains Dolby Digital & DTS as well, with HDMI 1.3 plus the new high def bitstream audio codecs. The Beosystem 3 accepts audio through HDMI.

     Hope that helps!

Exactly, that's what I thought. I thought HDMI 1.3 contained additional support for digital audio, especially Dolby DTS. ie. no need for digital out if you use HDMI!
