    Beomaster speaker connection

Hi, i just got a Beomaster 2400 (to go with my beogram 4002) and im not really sure how to hook up speakers to those inputs. are B&O speakers only compatible?

    Thanks.

    Re: Beomaster speaker connection

You can connect ANY passive speakers but you will need 2 pin DIN speaker plugs to connect to your beomaster which are available form any decent electrical retailer such as Maplins in the UK.

Item number FM42V is the screw connector type. Make sure you get the polarity correct though - small round post is positive & flat spade is therefore negative.

    Thanks Chris.

its hard to tell from the pic, but how do my speakers (i guess speaker wires) connect to that 2 pin DIN plug?

There are two screw sockets inside the plug. It does limit the size of cable you can use but sensible cable fits fine. Alternatively, B&O can supply cable with a moulded DIN plug on one end and bare wire the other. Good quality but not particularly cheap.

    Re: Beomaster speaker connection

Im also considering some B&O speakers. Do those come with the 2 DIN plugs already attached?

    Re: Beomaster speaker connection

Some do, but most often it's just another female DIN socket at the speaker end, or clip/screw posts like in any speaker. Some old small B&O speakers had fixed cords, but it's possible someone has already snapped the plugs off to connect them to a non-B&O ampifier at some stage.

Don't make this too complicated - anyone with at least one eye, two hands and some common sense can connect the screw-type DIN plugs  Smile

Common-sense is the part in shortest supply, usually, at least in my household!Seriously, whether using solder or screw connections, the biggest villain to watch out for is the single strand of wire which has wandered off as a separate 'whisker', always at the back, out of sight, & causing a short-circuit to the other terminal! The second problem is the tendency of the wires to pull out from their 'secure' screwed position as soon as you let go... when you push them back in, look again for the single-strand short-circuit.Steady hands, good light, patience & plenty of time. Oh & check the polarity one last time before you slide the cover back on!

Yes, I had this problem when I made up some leads for my old Beocenter 9000. Tried using 2.5mm speaker cable. They would be ok for a few week but then I would turn the volume up only for the protection circuits to turn it back down again. After this happening 3 or 4 times I cut some card and inserted it between the pins as an insulator. They worked perfectly after that.

This is probably the biggest problem - where to find good quality connectors. Some already have the insulator wall between the pins. Then there are connectors without any fixings for the cable (pull once from the cable and the ends come loose inside the connector), or the connector sleeve doesn't stay on the connector itself. And you can never tell how they are before you order some and see for yourself.

It can be a good idea to get factory made cables with molded connectors after all...

To secure the cables I have in the past but a blob of silicon sealer in the sleeve. You probably cannot use the connector again after should you need to change the cable length though. Although most cables are made up and then left for years as they are so not really a problem.

    Re: Beomaster speaker connection

    Thanks everyone Big Smile

I just won a pair of S35's and a pair of S40's. The guy that i won the S35's from said he had some original B&O cables so that should take care of that. I also ordered some of the screw type connectors for the S45's. I think i will go to to a local electronics store and get some good cable to connect. Cant wait to have everything together (with matching wood trim on everything too Smile)

whats the best way to make sure the polarity is correct? what happens if i short circut the terminal? will it damage anything?

    Congratulations on your new speakers!

Actually the polarity doesn't matter as long as you connect both speakers the same way. Don't put the sleeve on the first connector until you have connected the cable to the second one as well, double check, and you'll be fine. Don't buy too thick cable, thicker than what will fit inside the contact pins won't do any good.

Short circuits are to be avoided. Many of the later amplifiers are electronically protected for short circuits. On the older ones the protection might be a fuse which will blow, or there might not be any protection at all. Don't blast at high volume until you've heard something from both channels.

I gave up on my screw-type connectors in the end for this reason. The wires never seemd to connect fully and the fit onto the speakers was always a bit iffy.

I paid about £15 on eBay for a set of moulded leads, a tad expensive but there are no more intermittent connections and the sound seems a little bit sharper overall. I am no believer in the expensive cable voodoo theories, but having a really sound electrical connection can only help matters!

Dead easy, as stated as long as both ends are connected the same it doesn't matter. Easiest way is to wire up the male (plug) connector first then plug it into the female connector and check the wires are the same way round before attaching that end.

are the 2 DIN connectors on the speakers male or female? i want to make sure i have the proper wires set up so i can hook everything up as soon as they arrive

    Re: Beomaster speaker connection

The connectors on the speakers will be male, so you will need female connections to fit them. If you are making one pair of leads you will need 2 male and 2 female connections.

    Re: Beomaster speaker connection

im now having some issues. sometimes it will randomly switch inputs from P to a different radio preset. i got some speaker wires off ebay, could it be that the polarity is wong on them and they are shorting something in the receiver?

    Re: Beomaster speaker connection

Even if the polarity is reversed it should not cause the problems you are having. As far as I know all it causes a reduction in sound quality.
