    Beogram 5500 tracking issue

Hi there I just bought a beogram 5500 .It starts playing then starts skating across. Ive set the balance as per mmc4 at 1.2. The stylus/cartridge arrived with the stylus angled to one side so I pushed it back to center. Any advice would be great thanks.

    Sounds like a stylus problem.

You say that it starts playing. Is the sound acceptable or does it not get that far?

    Regards Graham

Sounds pretty crap. I thought it might of been due to the tracking.Apparently it sounded mint when I purchased it.

It is 99% likely to be the cartridge. I had one in this exact condition with the exact same symptoms. A lovely Soundsmith SMMC4 replacement cured it.

    Where are you located?

    Sydney Australia.

Ive read up on the soundsmith products but have no idea what to purchase.Do you think the mmc4 is the best replacement?

Ive also noticed that when I recess the middle black plastic circle it is still about .5mm above the platter.Ive checked the screws underneath and their fully backed off.Is this normal?

    Thanks for your reply also.

Ah - I was going to offer to come round and lend you a cartridge to double check the problem if you lived within travelling distance but Sydney is just a tad out of my wayBig Smile

The SMMC4 is far superior to the orignal B&O equivalent MMC4 sound wise, not as refined though in the manufacturing but well worth the money. I also have a B&O MMC3 (which is the next step up from the MMC4) and the soundsmith cartridge out performs that too IMO. So The SMMC4 would be my recommendation although if you have money to burn then the sky's the limit with The Voice cartridge.

I've just check both of my tangential decks (6500 & 9000) and they are the same as yours re:- the black plastic disc and both of them play perfectly so this appears to be normal.

    Good call,

if the SMMC4 is anything to go by you won't be disappointed. Many Beoworld members have bought from soundsmith and we truly recommend them, delivery can be a but slow though so don't panic, they are generally hand made to order. Let us know how you get on.
