    CX50's for free! How lucky can you get?

    Last week I had a conversation with a college about old speakers mostly. It turns out he had just bought an old pair of JBL speakers with foam rot. I told him that it was possible to fix this.
    He had no idea about this and told that he had scrapped a pair of CX100's once because the bass membranes were out - gutted!
    He then said that he had a pair of CX50's with foam rot and if I wanted them they were mine. Otherwise he would throw them out.

    Today he brought the CX50's with him to work. They have quite a few scratches on the cabinets and they do have bad foam rot but from the front they look as new and best of all - they were free Big Smile

    So now I have a mini mission to fix the CX's. Nice!

    That's nothing, I managed to get a pair of CX50s and CX100s for free (due to severe foam rot), plus a pair of good-nick RedLine 65.2s (which now reside in a lucky friend's bedroom). I still need to refoam the CXs.

    Beat that! Stick out tongue

    Nice deal.  I got my beosystem 4500 plus a pair of cx100's for $500 US, so they were practically free also.  But the foam needed replacing.  Only took me a couple hours though.  Btw, in regards to the scratches, on the black cx's they can be touched up with flat black automotive paint.  The scratch will still be deeper than the rest of the surface paint, but from a couple feet away they'll look great.

    Peter, thanks for fixing Smile

    @Alex
    Lucky, lucky you. I do believe you mean RL60.2, though Wink

    @camshaft
    Thanks for the advice but 'unfortunately' the CX50's I got are natural aluminum, so I'm afraid there's no retouching them.

    The brushed aluminum ones can be sanded and re-brushed but it's quite a bit more work.

    I thought about the possibility af sanding them but I think I'll let that pass for now.

    Yesterday I was at a fleamarket and found a pair of alu CX100's in what looked to be very good shape.

    I bought them for the equivalent of £25 took them home and tried them out. Turned out the foam surrounds were a lot less rotten than I expected and they played just fine. They do have beginning foam rot, though, and a change of foam would not be wasted on them.

    So now there's two mini missions :)

    if you know what your doing, it will not take many hours to refoarm.

    This weekend I made Beovox S55 and Dynaudio and a pair of RL 60 with new foarm and fabric.

    I hope it would be a fun mission fore you
