I've just purchased a pair of M70's with the original trumpet stands. I've already got a pair of S75's which I plan to replace with the M70's. Would this be a bad idea, I mean how are the M70's compared to the S75's? They haven't been connected yet and I don't know if they are working. First of all the replacement is merely a matter of looks, because I like the trumpet stands better than the square ones on the S75.

How do I open them to take a look inside? I can remove the front cover of the S75, but it doesn't seem to be an option on the M70. Do I have to open the cabinets from the back?

I've been working a bit on the stands, and I can recommend a product calles Autosol to clean the aluminium. It really makes them shine.

M70s are essentially the bigger brother of the S75, or more accurately, the S60 that preceded the S75. You are correct that to access the innards, the back needs to come off - I think there are 6 screws holding the back on. The volume of the speaker is quite a bit larger - 39.1 litres internally and this explains the increased bass response right down to 27Hz.

The S60 also comes with the trumpet stands.

The woofer should be fine. I don't know about the phase link driver in this unit - That is the one that gave problems in the M100. You can check for rot by taking the front grille off. I would suggest that replacing the capacitors will be worth it. There are 9 of them.

Do you know how to take the front grille off. I have tried, but they seem to be stuck. Not like the S75's that comes off very easy.

You say it's worth replacing the capacitors. I know they can dry out, but will there be a noticeable improvement of the sound quality if they are replaced?

Most versions of the Beovox M70 have 9 capacitors but there are some with 10. Probably following the woofer change in production starting with serial number 1442001

Replacing capacitors is an essential step in any restoration and it's pretty safe to say that by now, you will hear a clear difference when replacing the capacitors in any of the 1970's and 1980's Beovox speakers. Caps come in different shapes and with different lettering and prices accordingly, up to about 50 Pounds each. Kits are available that will generally cover most people's needs at far less money.

I believe the grills are either glued on on screwed on from inside.
