Re: Dave Moulton, King Street, the prize draw........and me.
While they were both in there, Lee asked Dave M if would like to click the button which would choose the ten random numbers for the prize draw. Guess it must be Dave's fault I didn't win any thing!

Re: Dave Moulton, King Street, the prize draw........and me.
Now each of us members has a number allocated to us when we join Beoworld. Once Lee had the ten random numbers that Dave M had helped to select, he has to cross reference them to actual people. Whilst he was doing that we went back into the main shop area. Here Dave M is talking to John (Lee's dad) and Lee's brother whose name escapes me.

Re: Dave Moulton, King Street, the prize draw........and me.
Dave M's presentation had been scheduled to start at 7:30 so Lee posted that the draw would take place at 8:30 ish. Meanwhile, you hungry vultures had all logged on for the prize draw! We were all taking our seats to listen to what Dave M had to say so the prize draw will have to wait until he has finished. Simon, who was driving Lee's van, is in the light blue jumper next to Lee. You'll notice he is an accomplished pick-pocket. The guy second left seems fascinated by the design on the carpet!

Re: Dave Moulton, King Street, the prize draw........and me.
Thankyou Craig, Peter and Lee for your kind words, it makes seem it worthwhile for me To start the presentation, Dave J introduced himself and Dave M to us, then started a demonstration of different types of music played through each of the three ALT type speakers. 5s, 9s and 3s.

This involved the lo-tech idea of plugging and unplugging different speakers repeatedly. Should have got my loudspeaker switch Dave, then you could have done it with remote control!

Re: Dave Moulton, King Street, the prize draw........and me.
Thanks Henry
Now, you will have to forgive my ignorance over the next few threads as I am not very technically minded, and the next three pictures are of pictures of pictures so are not the best! Dave, please correct any inaccuracies, don't sue me!
The acoustic lenses as we know them were a bi-product of an experiment to get more sound out of a tweeter. What Dave and his team did, was to fire a tweeter into two kind of dishes made of hardened clay, in the hope that this would make a louder, directional sound. These concave indentations were, for obvious reasons, nicknamed 'The inverted Dolly Parton', and where the focal point of both met, generated a 'phantom' tweeter. I believe they are in the top, black rectangle on this picture.

Pretty good, Andy!
Actually, we referred to the original dual enclosure as "the Negative Dolly Partons." Those were actually made out of concrete! Modleing clay came later!
Thanks for the really nice thread!
Best,
Dave

Re: Dave Moulton, King Street, the prize draw........and me.
Too cut it short, they finally ended up with this ugly monstrosity! This is what they took to Denmark, it was codenamed TWBL, pronounced Twoble. Anybody (who didn't go to King Street and isn't named Dave Moulton) guess what it stands for?

Re: Dave Moulton, King Street, the prize draw........and me.
Thanks Dave, it's nice to know you are on my shoulder Once it was ready, it was introduced to David Lewis the designer. Having heard it, he said he would like to make a speaker that sounded just like that .......but didn't look like it! His wife Mariane at first didn't want it in the house but she relented when she heard it, and it was in David Lewis' house for 9 months. It was David Lewis' idea to put the acoustic lens high up, on a neck above the bass complex of the speaker. Here is a picture of Dave M with David Lewis. (I always think David Lewis looks like a Terrier!)

Re: Dave Moulton, King Street, the prize draw........and me.
You've told the story pretty well, Andy.
A few corrections: the "Ugly Monstosity" you refer to is actually called "Ulysses" and it is a fabulous speaker! Ulysses never made the trek to Denmark - it was designed by Manny LaCarrubba in 2001, at the same time that the BeoLab 5 was being developed.
The trek to Denmark happened with two earlier prototypes which also had tweeter and midrange lenses. Poul Praestgaard and Soren Bech had heard them at an Audio Engineering Society convention in Los Angeles in 1996, and asked if they could "borrow" a pair for study. As I recall, they had them for several months in 1997, which lead to a development deal. That deal, in turn lead to the ALT license deal. The rest is reasonably public history, I think.
The speakers that David Lewis got were the first B&O prototypes that combined the acoustic lenses with Adaptive Bass Control. They were the Truly Ugly Monstrosities! But they sure did the job!
I hope this helps. Thanks again for wading through this for BeoWorld, Andy!
Best regards,
Dave

Perhaps if you'd searched for a picture instead?? (Sorry but it is Wednesday)

This works great Dave! I tell half the story then you sort it out. Wonderful. Thanks mate. Yes Craig, I remember that picture too. It wasn't on my Struer thread though. I'll see if I can find it.

Jandyt:That's the one. Where did you find it? Was it by one of us Struer visitors?
It was in the photo gallery. Craig

But they sure did the job! I'm aware that it perhaps might not be that easy to get a (quick) answer, but it would be interesting to hear how the above mentioned prototype (and also "Ulysses") compare 'job-wise' to what David Lewis made out of them(, Dave).
