Avant VCR + Virgin Media STB - won't switch on

hi, just wired up everything including the IR Cable from my RF VCR Avant to the Virgin Media (Pace NTL) box. Everything works fine, everything except switching on the Virgin Media box.

After I finish watching TV, when i press the off/standby button on the beo4, the TV switches off and so does the Virgin Media box. If i press SAT within 5mins, then it will turn the TV on and switch on the Virgin Media box as well. However if i leave it over night or at least a couple hours later, i cant seem to find a way to turn the virgin media box on using the beo4. The avant will switch on on SAT mode but there will be a black screen. I can see that the VM box is 'off' I then need to switch it on using the VM remote control... any suggestions? Have I done something wrong?

    Thank you in advance,

    Tim

Re: Avant VCR + Virgin Media STB - won't switch on

I don't have the virgin STB you mention though this may help as a first step.

Set the STB controller to permanently on or always on. That way the box should never turn off. Turn off both the Avant and the Virgin media box then turn them off at the power point for about 10mins. Then turn both on. Try the Beo4...

In my case the Foxtel and PVR boxes seemed to get out of sync and this process 1; rectified it then 2, ensured the STB always stayed on 3, problem solved (in my case).

It may also be worth trying the red button on the beo4 as it send an on signal in some STB's are in sleep mode of off and also placing a section of opaque tape over the ir transmitter.

    Hope it helps, beoaus

Thanks beoaus! So happy to have a reply!

How would I set the STB Controller to be always on? Would this be via the avant, i.e. an option?

Either through the setting of the STB itself and saving the option - or via the service menu. My Avant has is long gone so maybe someone can provide instructions. In the first instance try selecting another device then pressing go to see if the options are displayed. You can always exist and return to replace with original settings.

Perhaps someone can be more detailed.

    Beoaus.

Hello. Still no luck im afraid. I tried everything, and even looking in the setup menu, there is no option to leave the STB box on. Please help :(

Re: Avant VCR + Virgin Media STB - won't switch on

If its an early Avant you could need a software update. Your dealer should have these details.

This site may also have a manual to detail the STB power options if you are a Silver or Gold member. Other than that Stig or Keith or an Avant owner maybe your best options.

    Sorry, I can't help further - beoaus.

There was a problem with the STB controller which gave this type of problem and would mostly effect NTL boxes.

The soloution was to upgrade the software in the STB-C to software version 3.2 table 2,1, or higher.

The latest STB tables and either 3.90 or 3.91 depending on which box you are using.

I suggest you get your dealer to update the STB controller, it is only a plug in chip as shown below in the bottom left hand corner.

    Regards Keith....

    Thank you both very much!

I also have a dolby pro-logic card so i might as well upgrade the STB-C when the engineer installs this card.

    Have a nice easter!
