avant as center speaker/stand
Here is my thought: I currently have a real nice B&O home cinema setup: Avant 28" 100Hz, BL1, BL2, BL4000, BL9000, Sanyo Beamer, Denon DVD player and some other non-B&O things connected. Although I could wait some time before my jump in the flap panel world I would like to upgrade my connection possibilities (component, HDMI, apple-tv, ps 3) and some specs (DTS). Therefore I am thinking about a controlled jump in the flat screen market by combining the following: - Beosystem 3 - Non-b&o small plasma/lcd panel - Take the tube out of the avant and use the avant as a center speaker plus motorized stand This would limit my investment and keep the option open to upgrade in the future (beovision 4, beo center speaker). Here are my questions: - Would I be able to get a good offer for a beosystem 3 in case I did not needed any installation/setup? - Can beosystem 3 drive lcd screens properly? - Is using the avant for a center speaker doable? Looking forward to your ideas to improve my ideas! Regards, Bieele

Now, Bieele, I'm aware that my recent contributions to the forum were not much of a help - I hope they were funny, at least. (Anyone tell me, please, when they get too 'funny' ...) I can imagine that you will need a chainsaw, or a regular saw to begin with, after you removed the tube - and then a nice retouch to what is left will be needed ... It's a great setup you have, I would include in your calculation finding a place for the Avant in a link room - or selling it (less optimal, perhaps?)

Hmmmm, hardly any feedback, is this because the idea is that stupid?

I think the idea is excellent if you can live with a relatively small screen. The BS3 will fit nicely inside the Avant case and can drive a LCD screen. You need to check how the speaker of the Avant is powered and fed. You would probably loose the turning feature of the Avant.

Re: avant as center speaker/stand
I have some good news for you! I had exactly the same thoughts and came up with the following setup: BS3, some BV5 spare parts and a broken Avant as a starting point for the center speaker and motorised stand (bought for 100 euro in Nederland, thank you). I had some things to do making the center speaker work with the BS3 but now I have a fully operating HD BV5. I used to think of re-using the Avant frame and find a screen which fits but I ended up with a much nicer solution according to me. Feel free to visit me and to find out how I did it, because it's more then putting some boxes together. Even my WII receiver bar is integrated in the BV5. Next thing is building in the JBMedia light manager to eleminate the LC2's. The nice thing is that nobody will be able to see the difference between an original BV5 and mine, but that was my goal.

Hello Beogen,You are right, that is really good news. Your setup is an even better setup then my thoughts; the BV5 is my favority B&O design of all tv's (current and old) to my opinion (the design changes to the BV9 are no improvement to my opinion). I also appreciate the invitation to visit you and would really like to do that. I live in the southern part of the Netherlands, so the trip will not be that far to Belgium. I will send you a private message to see if we can set a date. I am really exited about your feedback and hope we will meet soon! Regards, Bieele

Re: avant as center speaker/stand
I forgot to say that also the motorstand is working with the BS3, the only thing you need is an extra cable which can be ordered as a spare part. The BS3 will autodetect the Avant motorstand which is in fact almost the same as the BV5 one. There's one catch and that's the frame which is connecting the Panasonic screen to the BV5 housing, it has no spare part number and couldn't be ordered. I had to make it myself but I have a drawing of it so it can be lasercutted.

Never posted pictures before, can you help me out because the icon 'insert/edit image' doesn't seem to work. I'm working on a mac, maybe this is the reason.

Hello Beogen, Looking forward to your photo's and even more to our appointment! I also work on a Mac; to add pictures you need to go to the OPTIONS tab; then you can upload images by selecting ADD/UPDATE below "file attachment". Hope this works out for you. Regards, Bieele

Re: avant as center speaker/stand
The amputation! I wanted to fit the larger BV9 IR-PCB into the existing BV5 plastic housing. I had to cut the left side of the 4-layer PCB and place it on top of the right/middle part of the PCB. Try to find the inner layers of the PCB and have fun...

Re: avant as center speaker/stand
The juice of the amplifiers, straight forward but I used some good quality components like Panasonic caps and encapsulated torrodial transfo (no 'hum'' for me). No detailed picture of the interface PCB but I used a MOSfet and a anti-'clic' circuit to enable the powerlink socket.

Re: avant as center speaker/stand
The 'fun' part This one will require a good sheet metal worker or a company who can do some lasercutting (I have made the drawing in .dwg and .dxf). Also 4 extensions has to be made with a ?turning machine? (draaibank for dutch speaking people) and welded into the sheet metal if you want to make it like the original assy.

Re: avant as center speaker/stand
This is the start, there's still some work to do on connectors, motor stand, etc. I could also ask for a raise and buy myself a BV9, but hey, I just prefer the looks of the BV5 and it's half the price. I also have some good news. You don't have to do the electronics if you have a pair of BL4000, this way you have a center speaker but you have to modify the wooden structure of the BV5 frame to fit them in. I like it the original way! The freaky thing I did with the IR is also not really needed, you can always use the included BS3 eye and build it next to the BV5 or even maybe behind the speaker cloth. Also the sheet metal can be done in another way, but why making it easier, it's part of the fun making things like B&O have done it. Good luck!

Re: avant as center speaker/stand
Thanks Beogen, Very impressive indeed! To be honest, due to the photos I got some concerns to go this direction myself; there is more 'do it yourself' electronics involved then I expected (I expected that more avant components could be re-used). For the more mechanical and building block work I feel more confident. I need to digest this info a little because I also feel the BV5 is the best looking TV ever made and it would be great to build this for half the price of a BV9! My concerns do certainly not mean that I want to cancel our meeting; hopefully that will make me more confident and I hope some alternatives can reduce most of the 'do it yourself' electronics. Regards and thanks for the pics, Bieele

Re: avant as center speaker/stand
Thank you guys for the appreciation! Maybe I should start a little business for custom needs.......;-) Since I'm working as an automotive engineer and having a B&O addiction, my great wish should be an employment at B&O working on the car entertainment, but it will remain a dream. They really need specialists and Denmark is a little to far away. @Bieele: Don't give up, I told you before I'm a little freaky and you don't need to do it as I did. There's also a guy in Germany who did something similar with Beolab 4000 which is much easier. I even started without center speaker. My first thought was buying the PCB's and woofer/tweeter from the BL 4000, they are not that expensive. You can build those into the speaker cabinets from the Avant. This will fit perfectly into the BV5. Electronic problem solved. You can also buy a beolink passive and a pair of passive speakers. As you can see, there are more solutions. If you can handle the mechanical part, you will succeed. Just start dreaming of HD BV5..........
