     oh dear

so basically you pay £3k for a super upgradeable tower that in a few weeks , you CAN'T upgrade !!??

hmmm.. maybe pc's aren't so bad after all..

To be fair, it is just that you cannot use that card! I am sure there are other cards!

    unfortunately , no

your g5 for example - won't run anything new on the mac , ie; radeon x1900 or nvidia 8800

it's a very sad state of affairs , but basically when you buy a tower from apple - you're stuck with the video options at that time..and there are NO upgrade options available to the user - apart from buy a NEW tower - which is quite frankly absurd

tbh - i'm really very angry and even depressed aboot this whole thing , i even emailed john c dvorak to see if i can stir a hornets nest over it

if there's no resolution on the matter - then i'm finished with apple , no bs , spent over £4k in july on something that is basically going to be a very expensive doorstop in a years time..

    :(

the word from apple - at least i don't have a G5 - that would REALLY annoy me !

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305346

the G5 quad is still a very powerful computer - crippling it this way is simply obscene

i'm making a big deal as the gpu in leopard is more important than ever and the x1900 which is the current top of the line option is a noisy , buggy , overheating pile of garbage

You have lost me! Why will the G5 be a door stop? I have had mine for some time and the graphics are still as good as the day I bought it. I don't want to upgrade.  I have upgraded disc space - I now have about 2TB  - and RAM - 3.5GB. Much easier to do with my Mac than my old PC. In a few years time, I will probably replace it with the equivalent model but until then, it continues to do everything I want. Or are you doing something different on yours?

you may not want to upgrade , but a lot of people do , especially if you're stuck with x1900

the noise this thing makes has to be heard to be believed , plus it has serious graphical defects - caused by poor design

as apple have adopted the intel cpu and basically they're more or less identical to the average pc apart from build quality ( debatable  in some cases ) isn't it only just and fair that we are offered up to date video card options at last ?

not just faster ones , but quieter , cooler , longer lasting ones ??

if you're happy with your G5 , then that's great ! i guess i've been a mac user for too long and am starting to get a tad jaded by some of apple's recent business practices

oh , for the good old days !

Maybe I'm missing what you're saying.  You're saying that a Mac G5 tower is stuck with the installed video if you don't get the upgrade right then and there when you buy it?

This isn't true.  I upgraded both my AGP card and got a second video card (PCI) so that I could have 4 monitors hooked up.

edit: oh wait, I understand now.  Right, you can't do that. =P

That's not the case sadly flappo. 1) Apple have already said they're working on a 'fix', and 2) there are companies who specialise in graphics card adaptions for Macs. There was a company who bought out a series of graphics cards upgrades for the G3s, despite the fact the G5s had just been introduced...

yeah , looks like they've got their act together- finally

took loads of mac forums moaning aboot it though , petitions , some peeps even wanted to sue apple over it and wrote letters to the effect

not very impressed though - they claim that in the 18 months since they introduced the old mac pro and the new one , they never once tested a newer video card in the old one

not in their labs , not ever !!??

which seems either dubious or incredibly incompetent

they spend too much r&d on the iphone etc nowadays

plus the fact that the old mac pro mobo is efi-32 and the new one is efi-64 , that's the main reason you can't just stick any old board into a mac

and if you can find me a 3rd party maker of up to date cards for the pro - do let me know ! :)
