Restoration of Beomaster 1600 - type 2113
Hi all, I have just finished one of my labors of love - total restoration of my Beomaster 1600 - type 2113. Nearly 40 years old, and cherished by me since I first fell in love with it in a small neighborhood radio shop (remember those kinds of shops?) in my long-gone youth. The electronics have been completely renewed - all electrolytic capacitors replaced by new axial Vishay BC-Philips, and radial Panasonic FM electrolytic and Polypropylene units, the old wide FM 10.7Mhz IF filter replaced by a much narrower modern Murata, the incandescent lighting replaced by LED's, and the radio section aligned.

The cabinet was stripped of its old decaying teak veneer, down to the MDF structure, and then new 0.8mm Bubinga (African Rosewood) veneer was pressure-applied onto the old MDF. The new veneer was sanded down gradually, and finally with 1000 grade steel wool to provide an almost mirror smoothness.

I then stained it with a water stain mix of red and brown, which was sanded again to remove the "hairs". The rear heat sink (originally matte black) was chemically stripped to its natural aluminium, and then polished. It was then coated with 3 layers of polyurethane. It looks and sounds fantastic!

And here's a front view, showing the LED lighting (5mm Warm White) - not very common, but the color tone is as close to incandescent as can be.

Very nice indeed. You don't see many in good condition these days. Lovely job!

Once again, you've pulled it off, Menahem! What a fantastic job you have done, you must have the patience of Job. That electronics kit your Dad bought you when you were 10 was money well spent. For Christmas this year, I got a solder station I have no experience at all in electronics, but this year I am going to order a caps and bulbs kit from Martin for my first project. A Beomaster 2400. Hey, Menahem. If you keep going like this you will end up with a reputation (like Frede) Well done! Andy T.

Thank you all for your good words! For me, this is very relaxing recreation, albeit challenging. The best part, is that I still get to enjoy the fruits of my labor for hopefully many more years!

I just got one of these today for £20 A bit grubby and the sliders are crackly and none of the bulbs work. The woodwork is excellent and it sounds wonderful and mellow. I will be stripping it and cleaning it but nowhere near as detailed a job as Menahem has done. If you read this Menahem, how on earth do you open the little flap that covers the four presets?

The FM preset cover pulls straight off. It says LIFT on it but that's a bit confusing. Martin
