There are many many threads debating the worth of the differences between the two.
To be brief, the Encore is a standalone unit that connects to a NAS and other devices; the original BeoSound 5 connects to a BeoMaster 5 and can be part of a B&O MasterLink network.
There are other differences but I believe those are the significant differences.
Please research the various threads to understand the many pros and cons of each unit.
First B&O (1976) was a Beogram 1500 ... latest (2011) change has been to couple the BL11 with the BL6Ks *sounds superb*
