yesterday I tried (for fun) a pair of BL3 in comparison to my BL4000 MKII. Frontspeaker are a pair of BL9. Of course you are not able to hear any difference in speaker 5 while watching a 5.1 movie. As my preffered audio setup now is speaker 4 till I own the BL4000 (yes, I know blaspheme ), I tried speaker 4 both with my BL4000 and after some songs the borrowed BL3 (same songs). I was told the BL3 were "run" in a couple of hundred hours.

Together with the BL9 front speaker the BL4000 mix a little "organic", warm sound and fill the whole living room. And the sharp, sometimes "technic" sound of the BL9 was a little moderated. With the BL3 sound was not so warm but because I used 2 pairs of ALT speakers, they added to a overall picture (sound).

But if you ask me which setup I liked best, I`m not able to answer the question.

Interesting. I also have 9s with 4000s and dealer has tried to sell me 3s but I have kept the 4000s as I like the sound and I like the way they look better.

Yes, you are right. 

Soundwise a question of taste, stylewise the BL4000 (same as you) prefered as rear speaker.
