    Re-Tipping Cartridge

Hi  I heard that there is someone called Axle or something like that, that can recondition B&O Cartridges and that this is cheaper than soundsmith - does anyone have contact details and prices or website details?

His name is Axel, and he provides a really good re-tipping service as long as the cantilever isn't damaged.  His website address is http://www.schallplattennadeln.de/en/home/

He has done a number for me - highly recommended. He has also repaired an MMC2 with a broken cantilever for me.

    Re: Re-Tipping Cartridge

I have heard only positive comments of his service.

I am about to get my first set of re-tipped cartridges (MMC4+SMMC4, visually good but sounded terribly distorted) back in a few days. I am eager to hear how they sound!

Great, thank you - one more question - the turntable it is to go in is the original TX (like the old 6000), however temporarily I'm using a Lenco GL75 with a goldring cartridge - the sound is incredibly  good - will the TX sound better with the cartrdige restored than the Goldring? - I'm having an odd time at the moment rediscovering just how good vintage hifi can be!

The Lenco is an excellent deck - may well need servicing though - look out for rumble! Have you found Lenco heaven? The TX will lack a little bass but will be much more resistant to external stimuli!

Just out of interest, and always been curious - do B&O carts slope off at lower frequencies or do other high end cartridges have an exagerated response / sensitivity in the lower end?

    Re: Re-Tipping Cartridge

    I can recommend Axel's retip'ing service.
I had a bunch of cartridges done recently and I'm quite impressed with the results.

They are pretty flat - but so are almost all cartridges! The MMC20CL is quoted as having a frequency response between 20 and 20,000 Hz of +/- 1dB. They are supplied with a frequency response curve which in the case of the one I have is ruler flat. Maybe a very slight rise at the top end. The MMC6000 has a fairly definite high frequency rise and this gives an impression of detail.
