    Welcome to Beoworld!

    Push sound 5 times.

Loudness is constantly on in your case.

Push arrow down and then store twice.

The (volume control)arrows up and down takes loudness off and on. Store twice means that the Beomaster starts up without loudness.

Re: How to turn off LOUDN on Beomaster 5500?

For some reason the SOUND button on the remote, commands the following steps on the 5500:

    1.Volume

    2.Treble

    3.Bass

    4.Balance

So, no step 5 with Loudness...

    What should I do?

Maybe there is some combination with SHIFT?

    Many thanks in advance!

I think we have been here before. The 7000 acts as you were told with 5 presses activating loudness - the 5500 needs either the MCP5500 or a Beo4. Ridiculous really.

Yes indeed, and I had forgotten the exact info and had a hard time searching for it... because it was in Swedish:

    http://forum.beoworld.org/forums/p/29089/229762.aspx

In short, try SHIFT+RESET (and SOUND+STORE afterwards if you want to store the current setting as the power-on default). But, if you happen to have a version of Beolink 1000 that doesn't have the RESET button at all, I think you are out of luck Sad

Re: How to turn off LOUDN on Beomaster 5500?

    Thanks, guys!

Will try later today and report.

Actually, the turned on Loudness does not abuse that much with the Beovox 3702 that I use.

Will it be the compensation, if I tune Bass and Treble at -2 or -3 or there are another frequencies for Loudness?

I believe the curves are different, so you won't get a straight frequency response if you try to compensate loudness with the tone controls. More importantly, the effect of loudness is dependent on the volume - it should gradually go away when you crank up the volume!

Re: How to turn off LOUDN on Beomaster 5500?

No RESET button on the remote- I think, it is easier to find the B&O fan here, and use his MCP5500 or Beo4 to simply turn the Loudness off and store it.

As far as I understand, it is not possible with the remote I have and the receiver buttons?

Correct, unfortunately. Without a suitable remote, the only way to reset loudness is to open up the Beomaster and temporarily remove the backup battery from inside the CPU module!

You could of course consider getting yourself an MCP or an older Beolink 1000 (with reset button) from fleaBay or something, neither are very expensive. The MCPs aren't too good for daily use, but make a great conversation piece!

Re: How to turn off LOUDN on Beomaster 5500?

Taken a Beo4 from a friend- is it possible to do something with that stubborn LOUDNESS with it?

He also has a Beo5, which I also can lend for a couple of days.

    PS

How does that backup battery looks? I'm ready to pick it out, but still a little afraid not to damage the system.

I'm not with my BM5500 now so can't verify, but it should be possible with Beo4...

    • Use LIST until you see A.SETUP, then GO
    • LIST to LOUDNSS, then each press of GO should toggle loudness on/off
    • LIST to S.STORE, press GO and the current settings (including tone/volume/loudness) should be stored in memory
    • Finally, switch the Beomaster off & on to see that the setting really stays off before returning the remote Smile

The backup battery is buried inside the metal shields on the CPU module, which in turn is buried rather deep behind the front panel in the Beomaster, and as a final nuisance the battery is soldered in. I heartily do not recommend going there unless you are experienced with electronics.

Re: How to turn off LOUDN on Beomaster 5500?

    BUSTED!!!Smile

The LOUDNESS can be turned off with Beo4:

    1) Press LIST until A.SETUP appears, and press Go;

    2) Press LIST until LOUDNSS appears, and press GO to switch it on or off;

    3) Press LIST until S.STORE appears, and press GO to store the chosen sound adjustments (the volume level is also saved)

The sound with Loudness off is simply fantastic in comparison- it seems, the LOUDNESS is made via very simple sound processor, that makes the sound a bit synthetic- adhusting BASS and TREBLE is quite fine about the sound influence.

    Thanks a lot to everyone!

Me with some of the vintage kit. It works for the purpose it was designed to, which is to compensate for the properties of the ear when you can't or don't want to use much volume. With most of the receivers/amps I'd like it to "back off" a bit faster when adding volume, though.

Agree- the function is very useful, when listening quiet in the evening, for example (if you've got a flat), but would be good to have the adjustments of how Loudness goes off with raising volume.

Re: How to turn off LOUDN on Beomaster 5500?

Okay, I was feeling alone with all of the posts and threads about not using loudness. The sound is just so much better to me.

I prefer the loudness on my BM3000-2 as compared to my BM4500 (I only have active speakers attached, not much of a diference on or off). The manual for the 3000 says it cuts off at  volume level 4. Does it actually taper off?

As a re-seller of B&O audio systems, quite a number pass through my hands.

You would be amazed at the proportion that come to me with maximum bass and treble boost selected and loudness ON. I would estimate at least 50% and probably a good deal higher. Obviously come from an audiophile household!!

Having reset the tone controls to flat and loudness off I then order a new pair of tweeters for the speakers!!

That is why the 4401 is so good - a nice Linear button which bypasses all the filters!

For a nicely designed loudness control, go and have a look at the service manual of the Beolab 5000 amplifier. It has graphs showing how the boost decreases with increasing volume.

Before I got rid of all my non-B&O gear I had a Kenwood pre-amp which had an adjustable loudness (just another knob from 0 to max). That was pretty useful.

The need seems to depend on the speakers as well. On my usual system (BS6500 with passive Pentas) I never use loudness, as the Pentas sound quite full to me even at very low volumes ("20" or so). Which is why I don't subscribe to the theory that you need a huge amp to drive them!
