Can I use vodka to clean the laser lens on my CD 3300. I'm asking because I've read on a Danish Hi-fi site that vodka is the only thing to use. Not methylated spirits, not isopropyl but vodka!
Has anybody got some experience with vodka - for cleaning.......... Maybe our Finnish friends (he-he)

Isn't Vodka oily??
Sounds a bit iffy to me (besides wasting a perfectly good drink)!

If you want a non-methylated alcohol then why not simply ethanol? That's all that's in the vodka after all.

Just tried a small drip on my piephone screen - left a definite residue (and doesn't evaporate as quickly as you'd like).
Sounds like a hifi myth to me!

OK I'll drink the vodka. What would you use for cleaning?

Just tried a small drip on my tongue - no residue (and evaporated too quickly for my liking).
Sounds like I'll keep practicing!

I like to use IPA (IsoPropanolAlcohol) and cotton buds (for lens cleaning...). Soak one end of a cotton bud in IPA and wipe the lens. Don't let it airdry but wipe the lens immediately again, this time using the dry end of the cotton bud. If allowed to airdry, IPA will often leave a little residue and even if dust and dirt has been losened by the IPA, those particles won't evaporate but will have to be removed "manually" and that's easy to do while suspended in the fluid (the particles - that is)...

I've always sworn by vodka as a cleaning solution.
1) It works brilliantly at taking stains out of ties. Use a cotton wool bundle, flip the bottle to douse it and then pat the stain and it'll draw out onto the cotton wool without leaving a stain or messing up the silk
2) I once used one of those CD labelling kits for my computer and stupidly put the sticker on the wrong way round for one of them. Peeled it off but it left a load of sticky residue. Bit of vodka and a cotton rag, clean as new
3) WD-40 is the other cleaning solution often quoted but it works partly by corroding the rust (or dirt) away; apparently it wrecks CDs although it's fantastic if it's a metal/plastic surface you're cleaning stubborn dirt from

Where can I buy IPA in DK? I assume it's called the same in Danish.

So IsoPropanolAlcohol is the same as "isopropylalkohol"?

I'll chime in a little late as I just returned from Lisbon, where I didn't drink a drop of vodka
The main differences between varieties of vodka are a) amount of water b) amount of sugar. Quality b) means that I personally wouldn't use vodka for cleaning CD lenses nor tape heads, because if you don't do as Dillen says and wipe off immediately, the sugar will be left behind and I can't imagine the sound would become any sweeter because of that.
Better just drink it, and use IPA for cleaning as all sober people do!
(did I include enough puns? )

I have now cleaned the lens with IPA, but it didn't help much. The problem is that the CD 3300 will not always read the cd. If I haven't used the player for some time it's very difficult to get going. I maybe have to press PLAY 10-20 times before it starts. Once started I can stop it and start it again without difficulties.
Is it the laser or something else?

I would grab a capacitor kit for the CDM module and replace the lot first. It may cure all the problems or at least make further diagnosing easier.
