    speakers for 9500

Hi - very new to forum and B&O - for years I've owned British hi-fi equipment, but have inherited a B&0 9500 music system. Well, I'm totally smitten! After years of believing you paid for the design I have to say the sound quality is wonderful, too. The problem I have is that the S40 speakers I have received have perished woofers and I believe (even if they were in A1 condition) are not probably doing this system justice. I would really appreciate a recommendation of a secondhand B&O speaker to suit the 9500. I don't really want wall-hung units and (this is the real pain) because I'm a mature student, they must be 'affordable'. Cheers Richard.

If price is your main concern & you want B&O speakers then RL60.2's will fit the bill nicely. These are the later version of the RL 60's which suffered foam rot so are best avoided. The RL range aren't the best speakers ever built but are still very good and a good cosmetic match. Another contender would be Beovox Penta's which are probably the best value used speakers money can buy but may have foam rot in the mid range drivers - replacements are still available from B&O though so won't cost you ana arm & a leg to put right.

These are both passive speakers but to get the best out of the 9500 (doesn't have the worlds best amp) you really need Beolab active speakers but I fear most models will be out of your price range - they ain't normally cheap.

These are just my own opinions and speaker choice is a notoriously matter of personal taste.

I think Chris is right about the amp in the 9500 - not B&O's best ever....

In that case it might not be man enough for the Beovox Pentas, but an early pair of Beolab Pentas would not set you back that much more than the Beovoxes, and having the inbuilt 150w amp, will have more than enough power to keep you entertained! Watch out for foam rot on the Pentas though as they suffer in the same way that the 'S' series speakers do, and with many more drivers in the Pentas, it's more of a job to refoam them if you go down that route :P

What about CX100? I have these speakers in a link room with Cona subwoofer. Sounds really great. Here in Euroland they are about 200-250 Euro/CX100 and 150 Euro/Cona. If you want active speakers later on, you could place the CXs in a linkroom using an MCL2A.

I have a pair of S120's with this amp and it drives them surprisingly well. I also have CX50/Cona on a link. beautiful sound.

Agree with David - S120s or S75s would be my choice. I ran a 9500 for many years with S75s and was always very happy with it. Should be cheap and the S75 is not prone to rot - the S120 is but when fixed is possibly better balanced.
