    Beogram 5005 help

    Hi all,

at last the 5005 I bought on ebay arrived but it doesn't work. If I press play it makes a rattling sound, the arm goes on the record, lower, then goes up and return to his position. Seems something isn't in the right place. Any help is welcome :-)

have you confirmed that the (3) three transport screws have been rotated from the "transport" to "play" position?

if not, slide the beogram carefully around the edge of a table and look up at the bottom plate... use a flat head screwdriver and unlock them. they will not remove completely, just hang there...

Hi Jeff, you mean the mechanisms aren't free to move. Maybe. I thought I unscrew the screws completely. Tonight I'll check them and I'll try to align the weels, I have the maintenamce instructions. If it doesn't work I'll ask your help again. Thanx

not quite sure what you mean... it sounds like you may have already dealt w/ the transport screws...

if not, simply turn the (3) transport screws counterclockwise until they spin all the way "free." they will not come completely out, but just dangle there...

if you have already done that, then we'll (beoworlders) have to move on to further diagnosis.

Well, yes the 3 screws are completely unscrewed. I've uploaded 4 videos on youtube so you can see the problem and hear the noise. They're named "broken 5005 1" ( 2,3 and 4)

    loris,

great idea with the videos! i think number (3) was most telling.

it appears that the spindle is displaced/damaged... (from shipping???) i will have access to my 5005 tonight and will take a further look for you...

hopefully, someone else may pop in to add further to your diagnosis!

    Re: Beogram 5005 help

You definitely have a damaged BeoGram.

From what I see (and hear), some of the plastic gears are damaged, the spindle is damaged, and the solenoid is probably also.

Martin Dillen needs to chime in here with his expertise.

If you can't do anything with it, send it to Martin in Denmark for a professional repair.

    Re: Beogram 5005 help

Thanx for looking at the videos.

I'm lucky and the seller accepted the 5005 back and will ( hopefully :-) refund the whole amount.

I've bought another one on ebay. Hope this time I'll be more lucky:-)

    Re: Beogram 5005 help

Looks like it was shipped with the heavy platter mounted. That will almost always destroy the
bottom bearing insert or even break it away from its base.

Always pack the platter separately, wrap it in bubblewrap plastics and put it under the Beogram in the box.
Lock the transport screws and cut some foam to sandwich in and fill the room under the dustcover and
to lock the arm carriage. Put a piece around (above and below) the arms as well.
Maybe we should make a How-to-ship-a-Beogram thread. Too many Beogram's gets damaged due to bad packing.

    Re: Beogram 5005 help

    Thanx Martin,

the platter was apart, but the subplatter, I guess, made the damage, beacause there was nothing under the dustcover. Anyway I shipped this beogram back. When you have the time, could you please take a look at my "new" 5005? I put a video on youtube called "5005 bearing spindle". Can you tell me how to fix it? This bearing moves too, even if much less than the previus one.

    Thanx

Btw, can you look at "B&O 5005 plate" too? It shows the plate going up and down, but it's not the plate, it's the subplate that goes up and down

If I glue the spindle, how can I be sure that I'm gluing it perpendicular?

    Re: Beogram 5005 help

    Good question.

I would apply 2 part epoxy resin (NOT the fast setting stuff which is rubbish) and then refit the platter assembly before it sets and tape it down ensuring the top platter protrudes equally all round the top plate. Just a suggestion as to how I would do it.
