    Beomaster 5000 questions

    Hello,

I’m introducing at the same time, because i’m new to this forum, and, actually to the B&O world. I’m just starting to build my system, and already bought a Beogram 1600 yesterday, wich looks pretty nice.

I’ve been offered a Beomaster 5000 for 375$ canadian, wich is around 300$ USD. Assuming its in good condition, does it seem like a fair price? Anyone has comments on that system?

My original plan was (and still eventually is) to get the complete 8000 series, but i can’t find any thats in a reasonnable distance from Montreal. Shipping kinda scares me and can get pretty expensive when shipped from too far.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Hi jf

The beomaster is in my opinion a good choice great sound but the only backdraw is that it needs a  special remote control MCP 5000 so be sure there is one.You can connect most b&o units to the 5000 as it have datalink maybe one need some small modification

    regards

    Welcome to Beoworld JFSmile
Do be aware that the Beogram 1600 can not be controlled with any remote.
The Beomaster 5000 does have a RIAA pre amp built in, which you will need for your 1600.
If you decide against the 5000, make sure your other choice has the pre amp built in.

    Re: Beomaster 5000 questions

Hi jf and welcome to BeoworldSmile

As jan has already pointed out the BM5000 is a lovely amp but limited to the remote control that can operate it. As well as the MCP5000 however there is also the option of the Terminal 5000 which is much smaller and far more useful for day to day operations. To this end I would personally look out for a beomaster 5500 which can be operated with the Beolink 1000 which is a much more useful remote as it will operate a whole plethora of B&O AV equipment and is essential if you are intent on buliding onto your system with newer equipment.

The drawback with the 5500 is that operations are extremely limted without a remote as it doesn't have the drop down facia of the Beomaster 5000 with the manual button panel. Both beomasters have plenty of inputs though - both DIN & RCA so are very versatile.

The system 8000 is streets ahead of both the 5000 & 5500 but be aware that there is almost certainly going to be quite a lot of remedial work required to get the pieces into top working condition.

Chris is right about the 8000 system - it's the one to have, but invariably all the units will probably need attention if they haven't been looked at since they were manufactured. Unfortunately this is an expensive business due to postage and the fact that it will be time consuming and require skilled attention that does not (and shouldn't) come cheaply.

I have a fully serviced 8000 system (and am selling a 5000 system if you're interested) and it is the best thing B&O ever made to my ears at least :)

    Hi jf

Yes it works what jandyt means is that you have to operate the beogram 1600 manually

Ok! Well seems like the 5000 isnt the top choice in my case. I like the looks of the 8000 much better anyways...

    Re: Beomaster 5000 questions

Will it be possible to eventually plug a CD player on the 8000? Or its to old? I read somethings about older models not being compatibles with CD frequencies or something like that.

I would certainly have the 8000 over the 5000 - but be aware they do take up a lot of space.
