Beolab 2000: MK1 and MK2? How to identify and what's the difference?

    Good evening,

do two types of Beolab 2000 speakers exist? For example MK I and MK II? How can I identify which version it is?

It seems to be a very intersting little system and I want to know to which points I have to pay attention when buying one.

Is there any possiblitly that a dealer still have one of them?

as always in this great forum: Thank you Big Smile

Re: Beolab 2000: MK1 and MK2? How to identify and what's the difference?

Yes, your right, there are two versions of BL 2000, but it's very easy to identify the version.

MkI has a [ATAPE] button besides the other three [CD] [RADIO] and [TIMER]

Mk II has a [TV] button instead together with the three [CD] [RADIO] and [TIMER]

It's possible to upgrade to [TV] by getting a new part with buttons. But actually with digital TV I can't use [TV] button anylonger. If I had a BC/BS with AMEM I would be better with MkI.

I have 2 BL2000 and the one in my kitchen is the speaker I use most during the day. The sound is perfect, even at high volumes. It's good to use without having to look for the remote.

A BL2000 is very good value for the money. I'm thinking of getting a pair of CX on my veranda, but a (used) BL 2000 will be cheaper then a pair of CX, a BeoLink passive with IR eye and a remote. It will probably even sound better and I don't have to worry about foam rot. So it looks like I'm going for my third BL2000 instead of the CX.

It's me again. I saw I didn't answer your questions.

Of course, don't buy them without a test listening (on low and high volume). Trust your ears.

On my second pair the metal parts (for cooling?) are half a mm above the other parts on the top. It annoyed me a lot when I got it, but now I don't care. It's placed so high I can't see it. I only notice it when I'm dusting it, but that's not happening every week. Whistle

There's a tiny chance a dealer has a new in stock, but I don't think so. You'll have to let your fingers do the walking and phone around. Best chance is to go for the second hand market.

Ah, thank your for your help :-)

The MK2 only has a TV button but via remote I could easily choose "N.Music" et.c?

Test listening: Should I just listen to get an impression if the sound matches my taste or to check if the speaker is damaged in any way?

Both have 4 buttons (from left to right):

    MkI: [ATAPE] [CD] [RADIO] [TIMER]

    MkII: [TV] [CD] [RADIO] [TIMER]

and of course the wheel for volume on both.

With a remote you can access any source available through your master link.

The test listening is just the obvious to check so it's OK.

I have one of these in my kitchen, its not the best sounding speaker but it is very good.  I paid £135 off ebay for it! so keep your eyes peeled.

Ahh yes, but shouldn't the [PLAY •] button turn BeoLab 2000 on to play whatever was the last source that was selected in Master Link?

In my system, if the last source before all Master Linked devices was turned off was N.RADIO or N.MUSIC, depressing [PLAY •] on the BL 2000 will turn on the radio, Program 1.

Because of this behavior, in order to play N.MUSIC at BL 2000, I have to:

    a.  Use a Beo4 directly at BL 2000; or,

    b.  Already have N.MUSIC playing in another Master Linked device, in which case [PLAY •] turns BL 2000 on and with N.Music

Maybe my software version is obsolete?  I have a BL2K Mk2.

Re: Beolab 2000: MK1 and MK2? How to identify and what's the difference?

I have the same trouble with [DTV]. If I press [PLAY .] it activates [TV] and not what's connected to the scarts of the TV. Tthe same with both BL2000 I have (MK2) and my BL3500 (latest version).

Always believed this was because my TV is old without ML so I use a Beolink converter.  People with newer TV with ML said [PLAY .] can get [DTV].
