    BeoLab 2 issue

    Hi All,

I would very much appreciate if anyone of you could help me with the following problem. I recently bought a second hand BeoVision 5 and have spent my evenings last month with a glue gun and loads of powerlink cables in order to complete my home cinema setup. When I watch TV (or DVD with surround sound) everything works perfect. My problem is when I’m listening to any of my audio sources (the TV is linked to a BeoSound 3200, all speakers are connected to the TV via Powerlink MK III cables). The BeoLab 2 turns on (the little indicator on the BL2 goes from red to green) but there’s no sound from the subwoofer (except for a very weak hum, only noticeable if a put my ear against it). Besides the fact that I have invested in a pretty expensive subwoofer and naturally want to use it for my audio sources as well, it’s extra annoying since I do not get much bass from my BeoLab 6000 connected to the TV either. I suppose this is due to the fact that I have registered the BL2 in TV menu, hence all bass goes (or should go to) the BL2.

Since the BL2 works perfect with the video sources I’m a bit confused what might be wrong. For a while I thought it could be a problem with the ML cable between the BS3200 and the TV but unfortunately not. I have tried with a new ML cable without getting any sound from the BL2.

Anyone of you who have experienced the same and perhaps can come up with a solution to my problem?

    Best regards,

    Re: BeoLab 2 issue

Sounds to me like the sound travelling down the ML cable is wired out of phase! When you sit in between the two front (left and right) speakers, do you get any 'phantom sounds' appearing between the two speakers (such as vocals), or does it sound 'vague', meaning you cannot position the sound anywhere?

If it is sounding vague, then I would say you've wired up the ML wrong, and you need to re-wire the ML plug in the BeoSound, and swap pins 13 and 14 round.

Alex could be rigtht here. As you say the BL2 works perfect in the sourround setup, the problem can't be the BL2 itself. Check the wirings!

This is not something I've noticed. I have my BS3200 linked to a couple of other devices as well and they always worked properly. I also checked with a brand new ML cable just between the tv and BS3200 so I think we can rule out the cable as a possible explanation. However, do I understand you correct if you say it is the ML plug of the BS 3200 which might have to be re-wired? Sounds like something went wrong when the stereo was assembled then. I was more into the tv since that one is new to me. Could that perhaps be it? I told my local dealer (who I did not by the tv from) about my problem but he had never heard of it.

I've also noticed that the volume is considerably lower when listening to audio sources compared to video sources.

    Re: BeoLab 2 issue

I doubt it was something wrong with the cable if as you say, you've tried different ones.

The easiest way to see if it is a phasing issue is simply just to have a listen.

When you sit down in front of a well set up sound system, you should be at the corner of a triangle with the speakers at the other corners, each one being exactly the same distance from you, and both pointing towards you. Then you should hear a 'stereo image' which involves sounds appearing to come from in-between the two speakers. Play music on whatever DVD player you use (in speaker 2 mode, NOT anything else!), and then on the BeoSound and compare the sound produced by both. If the sound from the CD player sounds 'vague' and you can't seem to point at where the actual sounds are coming from in between the two speakers, while the DVD player seems to position things perfectly in between the speakers, then there is a phasing issue.

However, if both sound very similar in terms of where sounds are positioned between the two speakers, then the issue is not phasing, but more likely to do with the way the surround sound processor is working (or not quite working!) in the TV.

    Re: BeoLab 2 issue

Well, I get the same stereo feeling both ways but sound quality can not be compared. The BS3200 sound is extremely dull (not quite sure whether it's only because of the lack of bass) while the cd played in dvd1 is terrific. Seems as it could be a sound processor problem then. Strange though. I'll play around with different cables a little bit more but if I don't get it right I'll have to let someone take a look at it. If I'm lucky maybe they can do it at home. The BV5 is perhaps not the most mobile tv set I've experienced.

Thanks for your help this far. If you or someone else come up with something please let me know.
