Control of Beosystem 2 without Beovision 4

Hi, first time on Beoworld so please help.  I want to use a Beosystem 2 to output CD & DVD located with an Avant in another room via ML link to speakers connected to the BS2 (6000's and a beolab 2).  I also want to display onto a Samsung LED tv (UE46C5100) that i was going to connect only to a SKY HD STB next to the Beosystem, and take audio from SKY into the BS2 so SKY audio is on the local speakers. I planned a 3500 above the Tv to control the link sources from the Avant, and use the IR dongle now at the Avant to controls the SKY box  - i knew there was an IR out on the BS2 but didn't know until now there is an IR in.

The only reason i thought i needed a BS2 is because the ML audio is balance pair and the speakers are L&R co-ax, plus i have to make a control box or they would always be on if sound was on in another room.  I have bought a BS with nothing else supplied, my questions are do i need an IR eye to control the BS2 and is there no other way e.g. via ML from the 3500? and it appears the modulator is off (factory setting) as i can't get a UHF output other than at the frequency from the Avant uplink on 791.  I have tried 599 and scanned everything.  I haven't got the samsung yet or another Tv with RGB so i can't even see what the BS2 might be displaying.

I am also assuming that the BS2 and the Avant input sources can be controlled independantly via a Beo4 and can't find any info on how to address them separately.  If i do need an IR eye can someone tell me if any old IR pickup device with a jack that fits should work?

    Thanks, Martin

Quite a complicated setting! Not sure it will work in the way you want - one of the sets needs to be a master and one a slave. You do need an IR eye I believe and you will need a B&O one - though I think it is the standard ML type. You could probably do with the product configuration guide (available to silver and gold members) that will help you work out options and connections. You can control attached units on the master system in the link rooms but not the other way.

Thanks for that Peter, i have been able to find Beovision 4 manuals at http://www.abt.com/images/products/PDF_Files/1895298_ref.pdf but like most manuals, they only tell you what you can do, not what you can't.  I am trying to get a B&O IR and if costly will consider making my own from info at http://www.lintronic.dk/InfraRedReceivers.htm

I am still stuck on not knowing if / how i can connect a screen to display output from the BS2 to access the menu dialogue, have concluded it can only be via the RGB / RS232 or possibly the UHF but only if the modulator is turned on and even then i guess it might not display the menu screens?  I don't have a Beovision 4 or any other B&O display with these connections

Could someone please point me to a link or confirm the Config Guide shows pinnouts (so i can upgrade to silver to get it) and can understand the protocols / pinnouts needed to get a non-B&O screen connected?  I want to avoid trial and error in case I damage the BS2 / Screen and at the same time i don't know the history of the BS2 - it might just be dead anyway.  i understand the screen has work with a 50Hz refresh rate so anything not capable of working down to that will not display

    Thanks again,  Martin

Re: Control of Beosystem 2 without Beovision 4

A bit of time and more learned.  Someone kindly informed me the BS2 should display directly out of one of the scarts, but not sure which one, as i only need to display video from the BS to do programming, doesn't matter that it won't be HD.  If true I can abandon the concept of driving a samsung LED TV via RGB and all the interfaces that might be needed. Also been advised there might be lip synch issue if the engine isn't driving the video output as well as the sound, even when the audio is coming into the BS 2 direct from a SKY HD (I only want the BS 2 to drive speakers in a link room from the SKY HD box and other remote sources connected to an Avant)  I might put up with bad lip synch to save £6,000 on a BS 3.

I was also told the BS 2 will not even switch on unless it is controlled via an IR receiver, so i would like one please if anyone can supply it's worth £50 to me used.  I would prefer the LinTronic pencil receiver at less £ or the name of a UK supplier that might still have one.

Could someone please confirm my latest info is correct and which scart it should be (i don't know if the BS is dead or alive) , if need be i can locate my DVD with the BS 2 and treat it as a standalone system, but i would rather not as i can't relocate the CD / Radio - it's on a wall in another room. Once i get the receiver and a display working i'll be able to muddle through programming i hope.

    Thanks,  Martin

The V. Tape SCART has RGB in and out. The service manual is on site and has the pin outs and a fair selection of the wiring diagrams. It also tells you how to access the service menu which allows you to change the screen parameters.

Thanks again Peter, i may have found a supplier of compatable B&O receivers at http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:rrZr4QKWXhcJ:www.adltd.co.uk/adl%2520-%2520ir.pdf+%22irr-455%22+receiver&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgxiDZWNuthE01EwQJXx7X6q1eINjUXflPG5knOd-SEvs9upoXZqrhgYdY-7-WsNbmzpA9a7e4IM2zWbqNcD3Hxa36xh9om9Nhq2KSIRFvq5HkwQZLmGXI-VKe-boj4EBU3XWcQ&sig=AHIEtbQFYyomFhzE29xjjRlnQ-6Rz-AyPw but don't know if they are going to be any less cost than a B&O IR sensor (not trying to avoid new B&O, just don't want to waste too much cash in case the BS 2 is dead)  If over £50 would prefer to make my own but can't find supplier of TSOP7000 or TSOP98200

    Thanks,  Martin

Re: Control of Beosystem 2 without Beovision 4

Many thanks to Stefan for sending me a TSOP7000 IR receiver, arrived today, soldered it to a 3.5mm jack and now i can switch on my BS2.

Another problem now.... the BS2 switches itself off after about 4 minutes of scart or UHF output.  Have read something about pin code protection but understood no display would output?  Can't get a menu to come up on RF or scart,  have tried entering the service menu but still no display.

Can anyone please confirm if the menu options from the BS2 can only be veiwed on a Beovision 4 (or a monitor using the RGB for the Beovision 4)  Alternatively, is the BS2 switching off because it isn't getting a handshake through RS232 from a Beovision 4 display?

Either way, i think i am going to need to make a cable / buy an interface to convert RGB to VGA or HDMI - if the RS232 socket needs a loop back to trick the BS2 into thinking it has a Beovision 4 connected, is there a tried & tested schematic out there please?

I've looked at the service manual and can't find which connection is used to operate a display, i've tried all the scarts but no luck yet, and one more thing, if i command DVD, Radio etc from the beo4 terminal the BS2 doesn't turn off the TV output on either the RF or the scart outputs.  e.g. if i did the same on the Avant the TV output would terminate even if another source was selected that wasn't connected.

    Thanks,  Martin
