    Beogram 5000 issues

Having some strange problems with a Beogram 5000, the sound is very distorted. Tried 3 different cartridges on it, 2 X MMC4 and an MMC5. It sounds the same with all 3. Also sometimes the needle wil jump, like it is playing a damaged record. Other times it is fine.(This is with the same record each time). Also there is a slight background humming noise. All I have done so far is take apart the DIN plug to check the wiring, which was OK.  Later today I will try the 3 cartridges on someone elses Beogram. 99% sure at least one is OK.

    Re: Beogram 5000 issues

Isn't there a selector switch underneath the 5000 for the cartridge type Craig? I'm not convinced this would cause your problems though as I don't know what effect this has on playback if it set incorrectly.

Underneath the tonearm pivot assembly there is an antiskating device on a fine spring connected to an adjustment lever (I think) - maybe this has become detached and causing the needle to jump - but I'm clutching at straws a little to be honest, it's been quite a while since I had one of these beogram types in bits....

Chris, I did try changing the position of the cartridge selector switch, but it made no difference at all.

Looks as though I have three worn out cartridges. Well I think the suspension has gone on the one I thought was OK.
