    LX5500 niggle

Most of you lot know about the bargain LX5500 I picked up on ebay and I'm more than happy with itBig Smile

There is one very minor niggle (which I'm sure has been raised before with these sets but I cannot find any reference on the forum). The problem is a small area of picture discolouration at the bottom left hand corner of the screen (left hand side as viewing). It is exactly the same appearance you get if you put a magnet too close to a CRT. Is it likely to be caused by the magnet in the lower speaker at this side of the screen? It just seems strange that it is only on one side if this is the case. Anyway, as mentioned it is a very minor niggle but if it is easy cure then it would be worth sorting out. If not I can very happily live with it.

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris.

Usually the tv sets' own speakers won't cause any discolorations if the degauss circuit is working. It might be worth checking that out. Do you hear the small "doinggggg..." sound when you turn the TV set on?

It might be also a temporary magnetization from some event that passed by... in that case, it should go away if you do the degauss cycle several times. Typically, you would turn off the mains switch, wait for 5-10 minutes (there's a PTC which will allow the degaussing only after it has cooled) and turn the TV on again. Since B&O sets don't have a mains switch, I believe standby-on should be enough, or simply unplug the set in between.

In the worst case, the TV set has received a hit and the internal mask of the tube has shifted or deformed. There's not much you can do about that, however this problem is unlikely to discolour only a very small area.

Anyway, it could be as simple as the plug of the degauss coil not properly seated. Smile

    Hi Mika,

yes it makes all the right noises when switching on & off. I already tried the unplugging for several minutes trick but with no success.

I'm not a big fan of messing around inside CRT TV's so I'll just live with it for now.

The internal degauss circuit is rather weak, though, and it can take very long before it removes problems caused by an external magnetic field. I believe most tv repair shops should have a degaussing device, it's used from the front of the tube and doesn't require any disassembly. Perhaps worth an inquiry, if the problem starts to eat you after all Smile

Thanks for your usual excellent advice Mika, I'll bear it all in mind if it does start to annoy me. At the moment though I'm too busy drooling over my newly refurbished Beovox MS150's to worry about a little spot of off colour on my TVBig Smile

You should have mentioned you were refurbishing some MS150's, we had no idea!Stick out tongue

If it wasn't for the sure and certain knowledge that I would be sleeping on the sofa if i arrived home with them,  I would be driving along the M62 to make you an offer!

Well it looks like Mika was right after all with the degaussing theory. After using it on and off for the last few weeks the problem has now all but disappeared.

PS the MS150's have now been sold Simon to a smashing fella in Northern Ireland. Packing them up nearly killed me and my fingers and everything else is crossed until they reach their destination in one piece. It has eventually paid off to be in my industry as one of our customers kindly supplied me with 2 huge bullet proof boxes - I just hope they're also courier proofSmile

Well, that was a cheap fix then! Big Smile

Hope you have similar luck with the MS delivery!

I am glad all is well with your LX5500. I picked mine up from King Street on Tursday and it really is an absolutely stunning TV, as good a picture on SD TV as I have seen anywhere.

    Re: LX5500 niggle

I agree - have owned MX's in the past and shied away from the LX series as they don't look quite as good. This TV has changed all that for me, I absolutely love it!

I'm off to King Street myself shortly to pick up a 32" avant in need of a bit of TLC so we may be looking at a another colour change thread shortlyCool

    Re: LX5500 niggle - A good clean!

An area that I thought needed degaussing due to disclouration was in fact nothing more than a slight accumulation of dust behind the front glass screen (over about 18 years!).  Careful removal of the screen ( see the manual - not a difficult task) and a good clean has restored the whole screen to its full original colour.

    Re: LX5500 niggle - A good clean!

My LX55000 still runs great. It says 1989 on the back but colours and everything works/sounds great.

Back in 2006 it arrived with a dead Beolink 1000 mk 3 and a L2800 floorstand which was great as the Beovision going out was an L2800 and I did not have a original stand for it.

The antenna plug broke so the local shop had to change it and update the software as it was the wrong type. I did take the screen of it to clean it, as it was very dirty behind it in the upper left and right hand corners. That helped alot.

The Beolink 1000 had 3 new Duracell's but dead, nothing at all on either the L28000 or the LX5500. However the 3 buttons on the LX did turn it on and change the channels.  So quickly down to the local shop to get the Beolink 1000 fixed. Later on I got a electric stand a 2 way VX7000.

Now there was alot of extra goodies with the LX which was a bunch of Link cables and 2 boxes 1611 and 1615. As the LX still works great showing no signs of giving up it's been a great value for money for sure.

Good to hear that all LX mentioned here is alive and well!
