    Quadraphonic sound, part two

Thanks to all who helped me with my previous post regarding playing quadraphonic vinyl. Thanks to those responses, I am now the proud owner of a beautiful ex-museum Beomaster 3400 (courtesy of Lifestyle AV).

However, clearly I now need a quad turntable, so I have a few further queries:

1 I know that the Beomaster 3400 has no internal processing for quadraphonic sound - this is done by the turntable. I also believe that the Beogram 6000-1 has internal processing for CD4 quad vinyl only (not for SQ). Does this mean that in order to play both SQ and CD4 formats in true quad, I need to pair a Beogram 3400 with the Beomaster 3400 (or a Beogram 6000-1 with the Beomaster 6000)? Or is it possible to plug a Beogram 6000-1 into my Beomaster 3400 and play everything?

2 The BG6000-1/BM6000 combination is certainly more attractive visually than the BG3400/BM3400 combo, but which would give better sound? Or is a BG6000-1/BM3400 setup the best audio solution?

3 What does the remote control for a Beomaster 6000 control? Just the amp, or will it control an attached turntable and tape deck too?

Thanks everybody (especially Peter) for all your help, as usual!

I have a Beomaster 6000 at the moment that is awaiting repair, so I can comment on 3) at least. The remote commander only controls volume, balance front/back/left/right, source and radio preset functions. If I recall correctly, the Beogram 4004 was the first remotely controlled B&O turntable, but that was through a different Beomaster to the 6000.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Quadraphonic sound, part two

Having gone through a similar process my vote goes with the BM3400 and the BG6000, its the combination I use. The BG6000 is a great sounding deck in Quad mode or Stereo. The MMC20CL's work with Quad sound and I am told the Soundsmith cartridges, the deck is pretty easily repaired and maintained as with the Beomaster 3400. The Beomaster 6000 is a great looking unit through with age is much harder to maintain. Both need regular use...

Sounds like you have a great 3400. I got mine from Dillen a member onsite. I actually use a BG1203 and move the BG6000 in when playing Quad records, keeps my arms in shape as well.

I have since heard a BM6000, not in quad mode just with a BG4004 and I think my combination sounds better. Perhaps that is due to the effort Martin put into the BM3400.

    My Thoughts,

    Beoaus.

Thanks to both of you - really useful input.

A BG6000-1/BM3400 setup is certainly the way I'd like to go.

Does anyone know for certain whether it is possible to play both CD4 and SQ albums in quad using this combination?

The Beomaster 3400 has an SQ decoder built in - that is what the Matrix button does! The user manual is on site! Having had both, the 3400 sounds better but the 6000 is the better looking. However getting a good 6000 is much more difficult than a 3400. The 3400 is robust and very easy to service where the 6000 is a pig. The keys on the 6000 mark easily and they can also curl up.

Thanks, Peter! I knew you'd have the answer. Actually, the 3400 isn't a bad looking beast in the flesh - hung on the wall, it will look rather impressive. This is a stunning example, too, with just one tiny little scratch. Now all I need is a BG6000-1. If anyone has any hot leads on a mintish example, please let me know!

I did have a mint one but after two years at Bellac it is very sorry for itself. Left in the damp, it is probably beyond repair - but I am going to attempt it! They turn up on Ebay regularly.
