    DVD 1 speculation

    Hi:

I am looking at getting a DVD1 to go with my Avant but was wondering if it is beset with the same problems as early DVD players - namely not being multi region and not being able to play DVD-R CD-R etc.

If not multi-region, is there a hack that will definitely work to make it so?

    Thanks

    Graham

It most definitely is not multiregion and there is no simple hack that I know of to make it so.

There are those shady characters around who will modify the firmware to make it multiregion, I think Lee knows of one.

Be wary of the Mk1 versions whose DVD mechs are now getting a bit "iffy". I have had two recently which cost me a lot of money under warranty.

DVD-R and CD-R are OK as long as they are good "burns"

    Regards Graham

    What are you implying!!  LaughingLaughing

There are fixes to allow this and available on the web. There seem to be both software and hardware fixes. Some dealers will arrange this for you though I don't think that Struer approves of this!! Not sure I would get a DVD1 either. I would look at another make and use a DVD controller.

    Hi:

In which case, dos anyone know of a player (new) that would do the system justice? Prefereably muti-region or one that I can hack without a degree in electronic engineering.

    Thanks

Tesco! £20 . Hack it with the remote. Works a treat.

I've had two Philips home units, a Philips HTS, a Philips portable, and I've bought Philips DVD players for other people.  Every single one of them had an available hack on the internet, usually consisting of plugging it in and typing a few numbers on the remote.

I'd go to your local store and make a list of DVD players they have and then go home and compare them with what easy to understand hacks you can find on the web and then buy whichever has the most useful features.

    Hi:

Thanks, its not the understanding of the hacks that is a problem - I am quite technically minded it is just that if I bought a TEAC or Marantz oe something expensive and then I bugger about unlocking it and they then turn around and say "you have invalidated your warranty".

I don't know if that holds sway anymore - I mean I have a cack multi-region Warfdale DVD player which I am using at the moment but the last time I bought a DVD player of any worth was when they first came out and at that time I think manufacturers were saying somethng like the above.

Are most machines now multi-region as standard? It is important that mine is as I buy a lot of stuff from the US and A

No machines are legally multi-region as standard.  They all have to be hacked or else the manufacturers risk the big hammer of the MPAA's lawsuit machine hitting them on the noggin.
