Hello BeoWorld!

Ever since I have joined this great site I have enjoyed looking through those great restoration and picture threads. So I have finally gotten around to doing my own on my 4500 pieces, a BM4500 and BG4500CD. I have to say that this restoration is purely cosmetic due to complete 100% functionality. I have already made a good deal of progress but will continue updating this thread as I go. I will start with the Master and move to the Gram.

Condition:
As mentioned above, the pieces are only being fixed for cosmetics. The mirror panels are scuffed and marked in addition to the glass touch panel having seperated and the paint getting chipped on the back. Since there are no mirror panels available, I will paint my existing ones white to match the trim on the front and sides of the Master and Gram in order to hide the awful scratches. I know this is blasphemous, but these mirrors are trashed. I promise, I will make it look good.

Here is the BeoMaster on my drafting table with the operation panel already removed. The double sided tape that holds it on had failed long ago. Do to this the four bezel pieces had to be removed very carefully and seperate from the PCB.

This picture also shows how damaged the mirror panel is. The previous owner who got the BeoMaster from the original owner said that the pieces were placed in the trunk of an auto for a long time without any type of padding.

Removing the operation panel PCB only requires the disconnecting of these two small green plugs. The little rubber contacts need to be raised slightly as they have moved away from the glass panel. This will be picked up later on.

After the operation panel is out, the mirror and rear grill can be taken out. To do this, remove the five T10 screws at the front edge.

Once the screws have been taken out, lift on the front edge and the panel will hinge at the back and finally lift out once in near vertical position.

Here is everything disassembled, minus the mirror top panel though.

When held up to the light, the scratches to the back of the operation panel can be seen.

The operation panel had fallen off long ago and was reattached with some more double sided tape on top of the original. This made the back of the panel very sticky and unpaintable. Goo Gone will do just fine.

While the clean up on the panel dries, I decided to inspect the bezel pieces. In two places there are screws that attach the bezel to the PCB. My BeoMaster made it out of the factory with only one of the two screws! A quick trip down to the local hardware store was all I needed.

The kind gent that helped me with finding the exact replacement was the owner, very helpful. He asked what the original screw had come from and I simply replied with "stereo." He persisted to ask what kind and I said "Danish" just to see how far he would take the conversation. Within an istant he replied "B&O?!" I said "of course!" and we started a seemingly hour long convo about the stuff. Great fun. Total expense for two screws: $0.28

Once nice and dry, tape up the edges with some masking tape and you're ready to paint! To fix the scratches, I took a trip down to the corner drug store and picked up a $0.99 bottle of black nail polish. Shake well!

While the paint dries on the control panel, I will prep the lid for cleaning and and a light sanding.

This picture shows the defects much better. I have put up with this for too long, this makeover is long overdue!

Anyone ever tried to photograph just this piece? Very difficult!

Next step, rough up the mirror panel to accept fresh, new, white paint. Feeling nervous and a little sick to my stomach!

The deed is done. Not wanting to do too much damage, I used 400 grit sandpaper.

Then with a little newspaper, some scissors and about a half a roll of masking tape, the lid is covered and ready for paint.

Time to wrap up the BeoMaster now.

Well done Ev, love threads like this. Does seem a shame to lose the mirror but they do look too far gone.

Nice work on the glass panel !

What type of primer are you planning to use on the metal cover ?
Not all paints will work particularly well on aluminum without an oxide primer.

(And where's that antistatic mat, you ordered ? )

As a "young one" ...I thought you would have gone for the carbon fiber!
