As lots of other people I'm looking for a glas panel Beomaster 3500/4500.

After reading about it, I'm not so sure I would be happy with it though. No printing/unmarked, lights barely show through....

Yes, if nothing else were available this is a great option. Ever since I refurbished my 4500 system, I've come up with several ideas for it. Thankfully, I don't need to worry about it though, I have an intact glass.

I think a piece of glass that has been stained black would be useless. For the sources all you would see (sort of) are red and green squares...

I think you could come up with a way better solution!

Perhaps masking off spaces for the light squares to show through and making small coverings for the source lights (squares) with the source names and such.

Does  somebody knows how this grey material works what you see around the touch "buttons" on the back of the glass panel.

This stuff should touch the rubber pins on the PCB.

Is it a sort of conductive material and if yes what does it conduct to the rubber pins, heat or electricity? What can I use nowadays to simulate this material. Is there anything on the market?

Regardless, I know the rubber and the metal pads (not sure what metal or even if its metal ) do need to conduct.

That makes sense Evan, but what happens through the glass when touched by the finger on the other side?

I measured the surface with an Ohm meter and it has a range from 200 ohms to 2 K. So it's an electric conducting material. That I can understand but what makes it active by just touching the glas on the other side? Interesting question?

I don't have the know how to answer that one but I had a great idea - when you repaint the glass - instead of say TAPE 1, put iPod in it place!

THIS will work fine. Also good for repairing the contact sheets on early Beolinks

You're right Chris! Received the bottle today and tried it on a piece of glass which has been painted black first.

And it really works! Next step will follow and that will be the mirrorized text engraving on the back side...

Leslie, the touch system is quite simple.  It uses capacitive change to register your touch.  The grey squares on the back of the glass are simply conductive graphite (I suppose painted on).  The rubber peg is also conductive.  when you touch the glass, your finger and the mica pad form the two "plates" of the capacitor, with the glass serving as the dialectric.  I had thought about how one would make replacement panels also, but as I haven't needed them I never bothered to look too far into it.  My basic plan though would be something like doing a thin black paint spray on the back.  Then make a simple autocad file that a laser engraver could use to burn off the words in the black paint.  Then use a letter silk screen to put the white paint words on the glass, or just pay a silk screening company to do it.
