    BeoLab 5000 Panel speaker

So I have just gotten myself a pair of BL5000 panels and was wondering if anyone could advise me the proper way of connecting them. I will be using powerlink cables. I will be using them with my Beomaster 4500.

On the back of them are cords that are bare wires, which leads me to my curiosity of how the amplifiers are powered.

    All help is greatly appreciated!

    Evan

    Re: BeoLab 5000 Panel speaker

Not sure I understand your question completely, but the way they should be connected is:

    - Powerlink to your beomaster (use 1 per speaker or daisy chain the speakers)

    - 1 Power connection per speaker (is this the "bare wires" you talk about)

    - On the back of the speaker the amplifier is connected to the speaker with short speaker cables.

    - Use the switches on the back to setup the speakers properly: 1 switch is for right/left. The other for level; you do not need to set this if you use powerlink if I remember correctly

Hope this is of any help. A picture would help to make sure I understand what you mean.

They need to be Mark 2 Powerlink cables for the displays to work.

Are you sure you have Beolab speakers and not just the Beovox panels? The actual panels are identical except for the amplifier which in the Beolab bolts on the bottom and has wires running externally between the amplifier and speaker. For Beolab speakers, Powerlink Mk 2 are, as stated above, necessary.

    Bieele,

There are two sets of bare wires hope that helps.

    Peter,

I am pretty sure they are beolab.

And how do I know if I have mark 2 powerlink speakers?

Have a look at the product pages.

    These are Beolabs

    Is that what you have???

    Or, these are Beovox's

Post a picture of the front and the back of one of your speakers - that will sort out any confusion.

Graham could even have asked if yours look like the ones on his avatar! Laughing

As an aside, did you get the wall brackets for them too?  If not, one of our site sponsors STBBrackets makes them.

The mains cables are permanent two core wire into the lower edge of the amplifier module.

Signal connection is via sockets on the back of the amplifier. Powerlink sockets are 9 pin DIN type and you will need Mk2 Powerlink cables to connect between the speakers and the Beomaster 4500.

The user manual for the speakers is on site for Silver/Gold members. Can I suggest that you upgrade your membership and download the manual which will reveal all!!

good for U , they're beautifull speakers indeed and good ones as well.

I do have a set as rears in our living room, daisychained them from my BS4 with fully wired powerlink cords for the display's on the BL5000

    enjoy them !!

Both your 4500 and the 5000 are compatible with speakerlink that will allow full panel display.

However, I also recommend the powerlink mk2 to gain full display, as well as the opportunity to daisychain them. They are also readily available from a dealer or Sounds Heavenly (link below).

The powerlink cables I have only have 8 pins, and the speakers only have an 8 pin capacity. -?

I managed to get the manual off the officail B&O website.

And thank you all for the compliments.

    Re: BeoLab 5000 Panel speaker

Oh no worries graham. My problem however lies in the amplification, there are wires that have been cut, it looks like a lamp cord. I'm assuming this is the problem?

Sounds like your power amp wires have been cut. Maybe this is done because the speakers were used in a setup where the cables where hidden and cutting the wires was the easiest way to remove the speakers.

Can of course be fixed. Proper way would be to connect new wires to the amp. Alternatively you could try to use connectors to ad a new power wires to the existing ones. Should not be to big a deal to fix.

    Good luck.

I'm not trying to insult your skills - but from the sound of this, for heaven's sake PLEASE get us a picture of what you're about to do before connecting mains power anywhere!

or connect a long power cord to the wire ends [the cut-cable ends that is] at the back of the BL5000 and stick other end in an existing power wall plug, but.............................be carefull to connect everything correctly otherwise the amp will blow a fuse [at least] and you will do the same after that a presume. I've done this several times at the back of my BL4500's and it''s not difficult and there is enought room at the back in front of the switches for the power connectors, but just make certain the connections are correct.

Yes, I guess Bieele is right and they have been just cut off. Did you get the speakers as a working pair? Over here cutting the power cords is a common (and annoying) practice of marking electrical items in unknown condition...

You can just splice a new cord with a plug into the old remains, but I personally don't like that solution. Somebody some day might accidentally yank the connection loose, and then you have live wires dangling about.

    Re: BeoLab 5000 Panel speaker

    I get it! Cool

They have done exactly what I have done on my wall mounted BL2000 and BL3500. No visible cables!

I have placed the cables for mains and ML in the wall. To be able to connect the mains I needed to cut the mains cable. No problem if you know what you´re doing.

But of course I've saved the cut parts so I can reconnect them if needed. If (heaven forbid) heel freeze over and I sell them I would get a new cable for them.

    Re: BeoLab 5000 Panel speaker

So I guess my next question is, if the polarity a major player in the plug? It may sound stupid, I'm just trying to get things right. Does it use same size prongs or unequal?

    Re: BeoLab 5000 Panel speaker

As standard they come with a two pin plug so the polarity is not a problem - having said that, they usually have a blue and beown wire so I would attach the brown to live and blue to neutral anyway!
